Marion County TN

My earlier post kind of got derailed but the point I was trying to make was that cyclists as a group should put pressure on any agency that is clearly anti-cyclist. There are several very large cycling events taking place around here this summer and it is a perfect time to try to put pressure on Marion County to do the right thing. Marion County makes alot of money from cycling events so I think cyclist could exert some leverage. I'm going to try to not spend any money there until this is resolved. I live in Alabama but only a few miles from where the three states meet. I'm sure there are many fine people that live there but I've been told for years that the kids on the football team get away with everything. Just last week the former football coaches of Marion County High School were convicted of vandalizing their own stadium and trying to make it look like it was done by South Pittsburg. Chattanooga has worked very hard to try to become a cycling destination, I hope their efforts are not ruined by Marion County.

The incident between the cyclist and the teens goes to show how things can spiral downward for a cyclist, in that a number of law enforcement agencies' bias towards cyclists as being some sort of instigator of an assault. The now mod deleted thread of the assault on the Vancouver cyclist by a motorist is another example of some law enforcement agencies' bias towards cyclists.

And they're still threatening the cyclist with charges... sad...

It is good news that the teens are being charged. Im sure they would not have been if this attack had not gone viral.

This is an example of the public service that is done by these forums, and we owe a great deal to the people that run and manage them.

Glad to see some action taken against these kids. Don't think it would have happened with out all the support and publicity.

I loved how the cyclist was threatened with criminal charges for posting it on his Facebook page. The Sgt. who made that threat, should be fired.

I'm a little confused by that one - I don't know Tenn. state law, but that seems like a public recording where there wouldn't be an expectation of privacy. My state, PA, has pretty extreme laws regarding recording/taping and you CAN tape and post a public interaction like that. Our local LEOs used to confiscate and destroy cameras...then try charging the recorder with wiretapping/disorderly conduct but courts repeatedly found that video recording in public wasn't a violation of our wiretap statutes.

Update: Marion County TN

They finally charged two of the kids involved in this incident. I don't think any charges would have been filed if not for all the publicity the case received. I want to thank David Cook who has really pushed this. It really shows what can happen when cyclists work together.

I'll try but since it is juvenile I don't know how much will be public.
