pedestrians killed by motorists: ~10,000 per year
It's time for pedestrians to fight back:

Would it be safe to assume most cyclists have driven cars before, while most motorists have never commuted by bike?
By that token, most cyclists would be more familiar with the mentality of a driver, but most drivers won't have the same amount of insight ofcyclists.
I believe there's definitely a gulf in perceptions between cyclists and drivers, mostly because your generic driver wouldn't have experienced the sensation of vulnerability when a car zooms close to them, or slams their brake inches from a cyclist. Even if no one gets injured, it is a harrowing experience, which no one wants to be subjected to.
Hence, it is easy for a driver to believe that passing a cyclist by a foot or two is sufficient, given that the cyclist isn't visibly injured. By the time the cyclist registers shock or distress, the vehicle may be long gone.
Education may teach drivers to be more careful, but nothing beats real-world experience when it comes to actually feeling such vulnerability in an environment packed with motorized weapons.

I feel that all drivers at some point should have to commute by bike and experience it first hand what it's like to be a cyclist on the road with giant deathmachines right behind us

The only way to teach an entitled motorist who has no regard for others is to be an entitled cyclist who has no regard for others.
The logic is obvious in its simplicity, we all owe spare wheel a debt of gratitude for improving our quality of life.
I'm genuflecting in his general direction.

Has ANYBODY on Bike Forums EVER suggested that cyclists or pedestrians should walk or ride across any road without looking?

despite our internet forum differences, in real life, i expect most of us would enjoy hanging out on a group ride/beer run.

Crap Spare_wheel, you just wrecked my ability to test stress reduction techniques, which had been based on your posts.

Sadly, I can't break the habit of waiting for the ped signal; nor can I break the magic hat habit. Fortunately, I don't get offended at the folks who smile and laugh. If it was good enough for Larry Harmon, it should be good enough for me.

In Pittsburgh they did a survey to determine how many bike riders drive cars and how many motorist ride bikes. I can't find the link and don't remember the exact number but it proved out your assumption. There are a lot of driver awareness efforts her in Pittsburgh (e.g. Drive With Care by BikePGH | Indiegogo) and from my perspective it seams to be helping.

part of the attraction of the advocacy forum is taking a strong position and seeing whether others can knock it down. believe it or not, i moderate my position when someone makes a good point (and even ILTB makes good points occasionally).
despite our internet forum differences, in real life, i expect most of us would enjoy hanging out on a group ride/beer run.

I may come across as a "car head", but really I'm just thinking like the professional driver that I am. From my point of view, your safety and convenience comes first, and I think public roads would be a much better place if everyone thought that way.
The only criticism I have of testing the waters with a strong position is that some people with poor judgment may see it as a validation of their unrealistic beliefs.
IMO, the ability and willingness to step off the soap box and find congeniality in what we have common says a lot about a person. I too believe most here would make good company in person.
