April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Now if we can only keep drivers' minds on the roads the other 11 months.

Thousands die needlessly each year because people continue to use their cell phones while driving, handheld or hands-free. Join the National Safety Council this April in urging those you care about to:

Stop using cell phones while driving
Recognize that hands-free devices offer no safety benefit
Understand the dangers of the cognitive distraction to the brain
Tell others about the dangers of cell phone distracted driving
Bike Safely.

Interesting + a good start. However, until states get serious about substantive fines/penalties - nothing is going to change much.

According to CBC news this week, a women was pulled over by police on the highway 401 and given a ticket for driving while talking on her cell phone. A little time later, that same women was pulled over for the same offence by another officer. After giving the women a ticket the police officer asked, "Do you think you can make the drive to work without talking on your phone?" Her reply to the officer, " Probably not."

With diver's attitudes like that, do you really think the campaign will make a difference?

No, but must admit to being shocked, shocked to learn that a bicyclist was not using 100% of all 5 senses 100% of the time for intense study of the road environment. Do you know such outragous breaches of proper cycling technique might cause a tremor or wiggling in the Earth's crust? At least that is what I heard a couple of days ago (Apr 1, I believe) and is now confirmed by reading this thread.

This past SECOND was sponsored by Distracted Driver Awareness Month. And the next SECOND, and the next, and........

I don't think I would last 11 minutes if I wasn't keenly aware that others are unaware.

Officers are stepping up enforcement... perhaps a third or fourth ticket might catch her attention... or maybe one of the officers will take away her phone and lock it up... we can only hope.

I have seen a cyclist riding around hands free playing the guitar. Didn't scare me a bit... I was a bit nervous for the guitar though.

Heck I've yet to hear of a cyclist sending a motorist to a hospital in a car bike collision. Perhaps it has happened... for cuts and bruises... but likely the cyclist still got the worst of it.

It all comes down to the responsibility of piloting a fast heavy machine. Period.

Isn't distracted driving awareness sort of an oxymoron?

Isn't it possible that a driver could sustain injuries if she/he has to swerve to avoid a cyclist who goes into the traffic lane because of not paying attention while texting? The driver could very well have an accident resulting in injuries or death without harming the cyclist.

Exactly... the constant "but a careless/stupid/sleepy/etc cyclist can't harm motorists and pedestrians" excuse is getting really tiresome They absolutely have the possibility to annoy or harm drivers and pedestrians with their carelessness.

ANYTHING is "possible", try not to lose too much sleep over it though; next question.

Right... let's just explore those "possibilities" while we review the reality of the 30,000 deaths annually by motor vehicles. BTW the NHTSA has stated that they believe 1/3 of those deaths are distraction related. You do the math.

Just looking at motorist death count, think of this math:

Considering how safe most modern motor vehicled are compared to, lets say, the '60s and '70s...how bad are these "killers by crash" operators-at-fault screwing up? The thought is staggering to me.

Then think of lifelong injuries sustained by survivors. Inexcusable.
