Yes, by all means get informed, I have been for years and so should you. Surely you don't deny that these bills are put forth by republicans or was that supposed to be a secret? This is not the place for delving into Missouri politics or carrying water for the likes of Peter Kinder for heavens sake. And the Tour of Missouri money pit was no shining achievement. The operative word wasn't 'evil' it was 'ignorance'. Have a good and informed day! It's been fun.

"An anti-bicycle amendment was resoundingly defeated on the floor of the Missouri House today. Thousands of cyclists lit up capitol switchboards, email, and social media in the past few days in opposition to the amendment. Dozens of organizations from across Missouri joined in the effort to fight the anti-bicycle amendment, as did major national bicycle, pedestrian, and trails groups. Defeating this anti-bicycling amendment today was easily the most important victory for bicycling in Missouri in the past ten years."

this AMENDMENT was proposed by a Republican who was widely criticized by other Republicans. The amendment was easily defeated in the Republican controlled House. And the Tour of Mo generated a lot of great publicity for our sport and brought money to MO. It'd be a shame if someone was so partisan that they couldn't see a good thing when it happened.
We could debate the issue of The Tour Of Missouri and it's costs and benefits for 'the people' of Missouri, but I will bring my part on this thread to an end on your points that we agree on. And yes, I am a capital "L" liberal and a populist, but don't be scared. Have a good one!

Just got back from Netherlands a few weeks ago. That''s a cyclist's dream. I was in several areas between Zandamm and The Hague. It was incredible how many cyclists there are and how much respect they get. There must have been 10,000 bikes in lots and parking garages at the Amsterdam train station. Only actually got to ride one day near Haarlem. There was practically an entire numbered highway system just for cyclists. Rode by a school on the way back to hotel just as it must have let out. No school buses or soccer moms waiting in vans. Just hundreds of kids racing home on their bikes. Judging from the limited time I spent there, that's one country that doesn't have an obesity problem.

I was buzzed by a driver when I was in The Hague. That happened at 7 in the
morning on a Sunday and I was in a bike lane. So that just shows you that there
are aholes everywhere. But for the most part drivers were nice.

Instead of ranting against one party or the other, remember that there is enough political stupidity to go around from both partys. Remember the stupid ban on bikes in Black Hawk Colo. It got over turned. The problem with the fools that come up with bike bans is the fact it takes time and money to over turn them thru the courts.
I am continualy amazed at the ignorance of these political hacks that seem to know nothing about how their wonderful proposed law has been shot down in other cities and state. The plain fact is that bicycles are a legal vehicle on streets and roads. This includes even interstate hiways in some areas where there is no other hiways to use.

One other point comes to mind about this thread. Banning road use to bicycles in effect hurts poor people and students that cant afford a car.
Another group of people it hurts are drivers that have been caught drunk driving, and have had their license taken away. They are now using a bike to get to work. Ban them and their bike from some streets and hiways would only encourage them to drive without a license and in effect make the criminals.

"except a bicycle may be operated on the shoulder of a state roadway if: (1) The bicycle is operated with a motorized escort; (2) The bicycle is operated as a means to ride to or from the operator's home to another residence, to a place of business, to a school, or to any public facility; or (3) The person operating the bicycle is doing so due to an economic hardship."
although there remains the problem that they are restricted to shoulder.

Hard to say if I would or wouldn't without knowing the area and what my alternative routes were, but I can tell you why I'd be hesitant. Top 3 malicious incidents: intentionly ran off road by 4x4, slowed down to my speed and kept creeping over till I went off road 2) 4x4 passes, moves over in front of me, slows down to where I nearly need to stop, then accelerates belching black diesel smoke in my face. 3) drinks thrown on me. I'm 50 yrs old, have ridden regularly all my life and things like this happen every 3 to 5 years. The more frequent honking, yelling, and flipping off can wear on you at times. Now the passive things I witnessed last Friday morning standing at public bus stop in Ohio for 10 minutes. 1 in 3 to 5 drivers were distracted in some way: 1) guy actually had paperback novel open on steering wheel while in motion, can't say if he was actively trying to read it, or just didn't want to lose his place for next light 2) girl eating cereral from bowl propped against steering wheel while moving 3) multiple texters 4) less demanding eating 5) talking on phone 6) drinking. Drinking may seem pretty inocuous until you drop that hot coffee in your lap.
