driver shows no regret/sympathy towards biker she hit

perhaps this is old news but I just learned of it... pretty damn pathetic

Texting Driver Who Slammed Cyclist: I, Like, 'Just Don't Care'

The article reads...

Poor Kimberley Davis.

The 21-year-old Australian woman was livid when she slammed into a bicyclist while texting late last year, putting dents in her car. The victim suffered a spinal fracture and would spend the next three months in a hospital, but Davis wasn't having any of it, The Standard reports.

"I just don’t care because I’ve already been through a lot of BS and my car is, like, pretty expensive and now I have to fix it," she told a responding officer two days after the Sept. 20 collision. "I’m kind of pissed off that the cyclist has hit the side of my car. I don’t agree that people texting and driving could hit a cyclist. I wasn’t on my phone when I hit the cyclist."

Davis, of Port Fairy, pleaded guilty on Monday to dangerous driving and was fined $4,500. Police say she used her phone behind the wheel 44 times before running down the cyclist. She called emergency responders but parked more than 300 feet away from the victim and refused to offer him help.

I had a forum member pledge to send me a token of support for a bonehead thing I recently did, I suggested I would pay it forward.

A slap on the wrist. If anything she should have to pay the cyclist's medical bills and rehab. Not to mention present him with a shiny new bike.

I came across this today, too. I want to wring that girls neck! If I was the guy she hit I would sue the crap out of her; self-centered entitled biotch.

Does it seem to anyone else just a little inappropriate to have a gofundme site up less than 6 hours after his death?

To the extent his widow and children need support, it's a good idea. But posting it so quickly just seems to put a monetary focus on things before the family has had a chance to even begin processing their loss, or beginning to grieve.

While dealing with money issues is necessary, it just seems to put the wrong focus on the loss at this point. I guess in a facebook, twitter, instagram world, everything has to be done right now.

I don't know what the courts are like over in Ozland but a remark like that here would be transmitted on an 6'X8' screen in front of a jury during her civil trial.

I had a similar initial reaction. But I'm willing to assume that this was set up by a riding or family friend who knew the family's financial situation and that their need for cash would be immediate. For all I know, it could be going mainly to the funeral expenses.

I don't think it is inappropriate. I happen to live and cycle in the RGV community where this tragic accident occurred this morning. Because of the new world of technology the message has spread like wildfire.

I did not know Eddie personally, but had seen him on many of the rides I have done for charity. Many of my cycling friends did know him well and I take their word to heart that he was a great friend, cycling advocate and a good family man. In a tragic accident like this I believe the last thing that family needs to worry about is having money to deal with the sudden loss of a loved one. And yeah, I can speak about first hand experience on that subject.

I say we keep his family in our prayers or thoughts. It's just a tragedy that this has happened.

She's clearly a vapid little ****, but that article doesn't actually make it clear if she did hit him or if it was completely his fault. The intro says she slammed into him, but then the quotes say he hit the side of her car, so this is mostly a story about how stupid and selfish this girl is and doesn't provide information on what actually happened. (Huff post half-assing their "journalism"? Shocker.)

All true, but she pled guilty and although she denies texting at the moment that she struck or was struck by the cyclist, that seems to be the element leading to her license suspension.

Regardless, it seems that the younger one is, the more selfish. That's the perspective from my middle-aged perch at any rate.

She was also caught drunk driving between the time of the crash and the court hearing:

Defence counsel Tony Robinson said that in the time between the accident and this week’s court hearing Ms Davis was caught drink-driving (.07) and received an infringement notice when she drove her friends to the Gallery nightclub in Warrnambool.

He said she decided to drive that night because she thought she was going to lose her licence anyway because of the collision with the rider.

She was going to lose her license anyways, so why not go drunk driving?

I'm a boomer. That's not how most of us raised our kids...I resent your flippant attitude. Says alot about your upbringing.

Only indirectly insofar as age is linked to maturity. Children (and people) are naturally selfish, and as you mature you (ideally) learn to temper that urge. Some people do moreso than others. Once fully grown though, I doubt there is any real link between age beyond, maybe, 30, and selfishness.

Heh. Just, I'm sure, as he resented the inaccurate and unfair characterization of being young as going hand-in-hand with selfishness, and the implication that older generations are above such things. Seems to me like he pretty effectively made his point.

My wife and I lived for several years in a college town for several years and were consistently amazed at how disrespectful, selfish, and rude that both the parents of the students and the retirees that lived in that town were. For sure there were self absorbed students but they were usually the exception.

I was raised by some boomers, and despite this handicap I turned out mostly sane. I think this story is on the front page of every forum on the internet because of her line "I just don't care, I have to fix my car". Female self-centeredness in a proverb, this one is. Or maybe it's millennial nihilism. Or perhaps youthful folly. Either way, she should be beaten in public and not get a female-cat pass at all.
