EDINBURG - Police are questioning two people accused of trying to dump the body of a hit-and-run victim into a canal.

Edinburg officers said the men had backed a pickup truck to a canal north of Donna and were caught in the process of getting rid of the body of 38-year-old Eduardo Aguelles. They were found near Iowa Road. Someone living nearby had reported the suspicious vehicle to authorities.

Investigators said the truck had severe damage to the front end and matched the description of the vehicle involved in an Edinburg hit-and-run about an hour and a half earlier. That accident was reported along the frontage road, near Trenton Road.

When Edinburg officers arrived at that scene, they were unable to find Aguelles. He had been cycling with a friend along the southbound frontage lanes. The Edinburg man was actively involved in the Rio Grande Valley's cycling community.
