Way back in the Bronze age (the late sixties) when serious Italian race bikes were a rarity, a bunch of used to meet at Ratner's in lower Manhattan for breakfast before our Sunday pickup ride. Times were different back then, and folks weren't staling bikes the way they do these days.
We leaned our bikes against the wall in a big pile while the 10 or so of us went inside and ate while watching the bikes through a window.
Sure enough, while we were watching, someone walks up, grabs the outermost bike and takes off. Naturally we all ran out, and a few jumped on their bikes to give chase, though the thief was already out of sight around the corner. While the rest of us were still staring up the block, wonder what to do next, the thief, rides up behind us (he rode around the block), greets us, puts the bike back on the pile and says "Gee, I always wondered what these were like, thanks" and strolls off leaving us sort of in shock.
