The ability to do it on demand is an intentional modification, not an indicator of quality.
Perhaps the indicator of quality should refer to the hairless ape behind the wheel instead.

Interesting article in the Boston Globe about "Rolling Coal":
Diesel truck enthusiasts ?roll coal? to protest environmental regulations - Health & wellness - The Boston Globe

I think that they allow non-subscribers a few free articles to read each month, so the paywall shouldn't be a problem for you.

Well the coal rollers in the article have a good point, but I'm a bit confused. The argument is that environmental laws are forcing diesel trucks to be less fuel efficient, less powerful, and have shorter lives than ever before. I'm no mechanic, and I don't fully understand how a combustion engine works. But aren't european diesel cars the cleanest, most efficient vehicles out there? Why would the opposite be true for pickup trucks?

I love the bumper sticker on that woman's truck. "I hate government". Its almost as good as the "I show boob for black smoke" sticker.

Its a very limited sample of the population, luckily. Like the occasional beer bottle thrower, its a small percentage of the drivers you have to deal with while out on the road. Although to be fair, when either a coal roller or a beverage tosser goes by, they are really noticeable.

Ha, really? that's like saying your neighbour has a good point saying he has the right to have 3+ pitbulls on his property to protect it... the last time I looked ad diesel truck adds they were saying "buy this, best MPG diesel truck on the market, 40 MPG Canadian, 33.4 US MPG" That doesn't seem like a step backwards to me... So yea, the whole thing is BS from these burn coal rollers with a grade 10 edumacation...

my understanding is that the newer engines have what is called a DPF. It loads up with soot and then it has to be burned out by dumping a little extra fuel in for a short while to increase the exhaust temps. So it does hurt gas mileage a little, but probably not enough to notice at the pump.

Of course, none of this has anything to do with rolling coal. It's pretty funny when some doubly ignorant buffoon passes and demonstrates that they think that a little bit of smoke from a poorly tuned engine is enough to bother anyone. Happened a while back to me and a friend. My friend was indignant, I was laughing at how pathetic it was. I'm sure it's going to become a little more common now that it's getting attention in the press, so most everyone will have the pleasure of seeing the difference

Some of our older tractors have the system that occasionally has to be cycled by running at a high rpm to burn the exhaust out, the newer tractors inject DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) as needed without the stationary burn cycle.

I may have been smoked today, not sure if it was intentional or coincidental as I was on a steep hill.
It actually made me laugh, thinking how some here would fret and fuss about it.

If you think that you "may have been smoked," you probably weren't. The real deal means that you can't even see the fog line from within the cloud.

Anyone who laughs about "getting smoked" or just thinks they got smoked, didn't get "smoked" in the real meaning of this thread... Yes, sometimes some diesel trucks put out some "extra" smoke, but really? When the mid day sun disappears, and you cant see for hundreds of feet, that's getting smoked on purpose...

EDIT; Any newer diesel truck, 1996 and newer just won't smoke, unless it has been tuned wrong or tuned to smoke on purpose... That's the way it is under normal driving conditions... I have had 3 diesel truck over the last 30+ years and none of them "smoked" a big black cloud, maybe a bit of dark gray for a few seconds but that's it...

Trolling?

I point out that DEP systems are being replaced by DEF systems, and shared what came to my mind when I found myself in a cloud of smoke. That it was one of those "macho" trucks and that the driver floored it just before he passed makes me think it may have been intentional. The reason I have some doubt is because I was on the sidewalk and was wearing a universally recognized delivery truck driver uniform.
My point being that considering the things that can be done by hateful ignorant people, my experience intentional or not didn't rate the anger and indignation that some display about it.

The part that was trolling was to minimize the experiences of those of us that have actually been smoked, it's not a laughing matter and I hope it doesn't happen to you.

if it required flooring, it wasn't what people on this thread are talking about. The people that do this are anti-social idiots, so they may not understand what is required to generate enough smoke to really cause problems for people. Up-thread, I talked about an experience I had with one such uninformed idiot who thought that flooring his ridiculous truck would produce enough smoke to cause me and my friend some level of physical distress. Not until he blows his head gasket, at which time I will laugh at him again. Hopefully he never figures out what is required.

15 minutes ago. I was riding down a hill near my house on the shoulder, 2 other cyclists were coming up the same hill on the other side of the road, and on the shoulder, too--and a truck passed them, paused, then gunned it to scare them and drop smoke. Then, 15 minutes later when I was coming up the same hill, the same truck came from the other direction and did the same to me. Farmboys with chromed smokestacks. I've seen it around here fairly regularly. Real a$$holes, I'll be looking for them from now on. Wish I had a GoPro.

I've been operating diesel powered equipment for over 30 years, I believe I comprehend the difference between the emissions of a old or out of tune engine, and one tampered with by an inbred hillbilly for effect. Also as I stated earlier I saw nothing to indicate if I was targeted by an ignorant fool, or just had unfortunate timing to be in the proximity of one.

Whatever the case, I was underwhelmed by the experience, it being a fleeting and inconsequential thing, not worthy of the anguish some attach to it.

And on the way home from work today, some hood rat called me an a$$hole, and told me to get off the road.........it gave me a laugh too thinking of some A&S histrionics........After all is said and done, a negative reaction is the victory they're seeking.

No,

My comments are about inconsequential "emotional" anguish, not those who suffer actual harm because of physical conditions.

So I have your permission to have some consequential "physical" anguish, something a wee bit more than a "fleeting and inconsequential thing"?

No,

Because its not mine to give or deny.......but I do reserve the right to be amused by public displays of angst....and to be disappointed that some also take my "fleeting and inconsequential" mirth seriously.

Its not like I'm defending or excusing the the antisocial acts of those toy truck driving cretins.

My lungs don't ask me for permission either. But do let me know how far out of sight I need to go so that I don't make a "public display" of, you know, inhaling on my inhaler.

BTW, on the last paragraph, WTF? It's exactly like you are saying no harm (to Kickstart) no foul.

I don't know if you're being obtuse, or if you just believe everything is all about you.
I'm sorry it causes you physical distress, but going by many comments here and in the links provided it doesn't for most folks, yet a few of those who are otherwise not effected still make a big fuss over it the way some do about being told to "get on the sidewalk" or other foolish nonsense.
Yeah it sucks to be disrespected, but that's life, to blow it out of proportion and over react on principle alone is ridiculous IMO.

Yea it does suck to be disrespected, and that's why we/some here are blowing off steam... If that guy in the truck that smoked me did that to me (disrespected) me in, say a bank line up and pushed me out of the way and cut in front of me I wouldn't be here whining about it, I would be tapping him on the shoulder and discussing it with him. Personally... And thus the chance of someone doing that somehow diminishes, when things get personal, and there isn't a 3 ton vehicle in between. JMO
