Seems to me that the "seamier parts of town" have few bicycle thefts.

Most of the thefts are downtown and at BART stations, where people are probably locking their bikes when at work or shopping.

BART stations aren't exactly the Crystal Palace.

Not take away from the very cool seismograph - here's a map of bikes stolen in the Boston area. Not surprisingly a high % is near Harvard, MIT and the multitude of colleges here. http://bikenapped.com/map.html
