Cars vs Cars & Pedestrians vs Cars, Bicycles, and Pedestrians

I think Tim did a great job on this and highlighting the different approach of The Netherlands and others. What he left out is how many roads and streets are car only, not even including adequate or any space for humans to walk.

Bicycle Perth: Australia, start counting to three

Bicycles are vastly different than motor vehicles and fairly different from pedestrians. To the best of my knowledge there is nowhere that has successfully mixed the three modes.

I doubt it humanly possible to mix pedestrian, bicycles and automobiles better than they do in the Netherlands.

The irony is that this 1906 video from San Francisco shows a rather good mix of street cars, pedestrians, bicyclists, automobiles and horse drawn carriages... the problem is that over time everything was removed from the road for the sole use of the automobile. Speeds were raised, trolleys gave way to buses, and pedestrians and cyclists were shunted to the side.

At human scale speeds we can all share the roads.

London certainly isn't close; most everybody seems to resent most everybody else taking up space on the road, or so I often read.

Trafalgar Square, some years ago. This stretch has since been pedestrianised, making a more friendly space for guys like this

to jam. So that's one answer: get rid of roads. Can't see it catching on.
