Driver gets probation in death of cyclist

"An 87-year-old man was sentenced Friday to five years probation for an April 2012 wreck that took the life of a bicyclist in Southwest Austin. He initially faced a higher felony charge of criminally negligent homicide with a deadly weapon after a grand jury indicted him last year, according to court documents. The indictment says Widener was traveling “at an unsafe speed” and on the shoulder “when he knew his vision was poor, and by failing to keep a proper lookout.”"

And if Texas has a 2 year limit to file civil law suits, it may be too late for a wrongful death suit.

So the killer only has to avoid getting caught driving for five years. That might be hard to do, since he seems to be driving while mostly blind.

I sort of get the sentiment. But it wasn't on purpose, and although driving like that will most likely end in something bad, it was still an accident, regardless of how idiotic and blind the driver was. In other words, what I don't get is the need to say that XX wasn't an accident. Think of it this way: An accident waiting to happen is still an accident when it does happen.

The addiction to drive an automobile is strong in the US, plus the fact that many roads and urban landscapes in the US, over the years, have been designed for the car, making it a more desirable transportation mode.
