Actually, entering an intersection out of turn, without right-of-way is quite wrong, and not by the book. You "assumed" that you had been waved thru; not that the driver was swatting flies.
Think of it this way... if a traffic cop had been observing the events, could you have cited for an infraction? There's your answer....

If they were to the left, wouldn't that actually give you the right-of-way (having arrived at the same time)? This may change from state to state, but I'll bet most places are pretty consistent on this.

It looks like the driver got angry because you had the right-of-way and didn't use it.

When I can't make out what they're saying, I just assume it's words of encouragement.

My understanding is that the stop sign means you have to stop and wait until it is safe to proceed. If the other driver waves you and cedes the right of way, it is safe to proceed, and this is legal. This makes sense in dense cities with 2 one lane one way streets - there is only 1 other driver. If you're on a smaller road crossing 4 lanes of traffic, one driver waiting doesn't mean the others will, so it still may not be safe or legal.

To the OP, don't wouldn't worry if random motorists shouts at you. It's only serious if they run you off the road, or when they have badges and guns.

But, you see, by labeling someone else's thread 'worthless crybaby crap' (or whatever the term you used. Not worth my time to go back and look it up) you are assuming more authority than you are entitled to.

Your judgement that this is a 'worthless' thread is, in itself, worthless. You wasted your time, our time and forum space for no reason at all. Unless maybe it was just to make someone else feel bad.

If you start reading a thread and decided that it's nonsense or worthless to you, or whatever, then just go on your way!

Find a thread that does measure up to your oh-so-sophisticated standards and comment there.

It's not hard.

Too funny! But the joke is on you.

The specific "labeling" of the Original Post as "worthless random things" was by the OP himself and I directly quoted him describing his own post. But of course why would you be aware of that as you already stated that looking up such details and being accurate is not worth your time.

What should be the label for your off base wacky rant?

+1

A clear signal that I am NOT GOING is to stop and put my feet on the ground. A clear signal that I AM GOING is to stand up on the pedals and crank hard. Motorists understand these actions from birth. Never had an issue. The OP chose some gray area which that particular motorist did not understand. It really is black or white here. STOP or GO, and make it plain as day what you are going to do.

Just don't let them run you over, and you are golden.

i NEVER take them up on it. while i appreciate the intent of courtesy, i prefer to behave, and expect them to as well, with the predictable behavior that traffic laws are intended to create.

I've had the same thing happen. Maybe he misinterpreted your action. Or maybe you his. In any case his reaction says more about him than you or your action.

Agreed. I look at it as right of way is not a privilege that they can surrender, it's a responsibility for them to take it as much as it is for me to yield. The best is when there are two lanes of traffic in one direction and someone stops and tries to wave me across, as if they can speak for the drivers in the lane right next to them, who have no idea what they are doing.

Whether your biking, walking, running or riding a bus, there will occasionally be those that don't like for some reason what ever it is that we do. Just smile and move on.

Again we prove yet again why Bikeform is known for its welcoming members. Oh wait its the opposite. To the OP it happens and I'm sorry it happened. I'm also very sorry for some of the commenters. I really wish the ban hammer would come out.

Why? We're all human beings, and human beings have differences. When we start threads, we always run the risk of being disagreed with.

Try waiting at the side of the road with crutches. After being taken out on my bike by a car. I was on crutches for 3 months cars will stop and wait even if you wave them to go they just wait and wave me to cross the road. Even if the there are lots of traffic the gimp gets to go first. It happened all the time.

Now how to ride with crutches

Back in college, my brother had spraied his ankle. It didn't stop him from biking though. So as he's biking, carrying crutches. . . he gets hit by a car. Talk about being prepared!

Welcome to the forum. I hope you don't let the tenor of some of the posters here scare you off. There can be some very good, advice and information dispensed here and in the other sub-forums. It does not matter what the topic is, there are certain posters who feel a compelling need to find some level of disagreement or to create some level of controversy.

I'd guess that most of us have faced a similar set of circumstances. Most of the time I insist the person with the right of way exercise that right. I stop and look in the opposite direction. That seems to be the most efficient way, in my experience, to get them to go. It also happens regularly that we do everything right and drivers take issue. They simply do not understand why we do what we do. I forget which constitutional amendment it is, but one of them guarantees the right to live life unimpeded, unhindered and without being offended.

People can be dicks, drivers can be dicks, bicyclists can be dicks and so can forum posters. I would say I can have a little dick in me on rare occasion, but that might not sound quite right. The aforementioned groups can be remarkably oblivious too. I have found that when I temper my expectations accordingly I am safer and not as prone to disappointment.

Don't let the contrarians dissuade you. It's them, not you.

Why? I assume the reason is that some posters expect BikeForums to be a love fest of high fivin' dudes singing the praise of any poster who maintains that motorists (or any motorist that crosses their figurative path) are dicks or otherwise less worthy than themselves. Any diversion from group singing Kumbaya merits banishment in this narrow viewpoint.

Thank you for your own sensible view on this issue.

This survey of motorists indicates that cyclists are the bottom of the list of the 20 complaints.

Check out some youtube videos on
1)bad cycling
2)bad drivers

So if the guy was yelling at you on a bike, would he have preferred that you were in a car?
