I got no love for Bono or U2. There are a couple songs they do which I actually like, but for the most part, meh or downright dislike. So it's tempting for me to join up with the Bono Haterz Club and say, "Can't play guitar? Great!" But then I put even a bit of thought into it. Imagine if you couldn't do what you like doing more than anything else. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, not even Bono.

"Recovery has been more difficult than I thought... As I write this, it is not clear that I will ever play guitar again. The band have reminded me that neither they nor Western civilization are depending on this."

I appreciate the bolded part.

Yeah, I don't like their music much either, never a fan. But I still wish the guy luck.

This. I broke a kneecap in June and was off my bike for nearly 5 months. The orthopaedic surgeon assured me I'd have a full recovery and be able to ride again. I would have been devastated had I not gotten that word.

Sorry to hear about his probable inability to play his guitars - but will he be able to ride a bike again?

I'd assume he will be able to if he wants to.

After his terrible injury I wouldn't blame him if he never rode a bike again. I love playing music myself, but I would choose cycling over strumming any day.

Yeah, it all depends on how passionate Bono was about cycling. I've suffered two major breaks in the last year while riding (a fractured wrist and a fractured patella), but I'm back in the saddle now.

U2 in Vancouver.

"I really used to think that my head was harder than any surface it came in contact with, and I don't anymore,” Bono said backstage. "I didn't come off a Harley-Davidson. I came off a push bike and smashed myself to bits. There is no glory here."

.... But he is still recovering. "It feels like I have somebody else's hand," he said backstage. Pointing to his curled fourth finger and pinky, he said, "I can't bend these, and this" — he pointed to another part of his hand — "is like rigor mortis. But they say that nerves heal about a millimeter a week, so in about 13 months I should know if it's coming back." He gestured to his forearm and elbow. "It's all numb here, and this is titanium," he said. "The shoulder's better, the face is better."

He held up his hand again. "But this is the hard bit because I can't play guitar," he said, then glanced at the other band members. "They don’t seem to mind," he said with a half-grin.
