Bike vs. Pedestrian=Cyclist Dead

Sad news. Unexpected.

Cyclist dies two days after collision with pedestrian in Altrincham - Manchester Evening News

A 49 year old female cyclist had a collision with a pedestrian, and she died two days later. No news yet as to whether she was wearing a helmet, I assume she died of a head injury after hitting the ground...

Cyclists always need to be careful around pedestrians.

yeah, hitting a pedestrian is not a good option. They aren't all soft and cushiony. The famous cyclist-pedestrian incident in San Fransisco a few years ago resulted in the cyclist being hospitalized

Yeah, it's speculating, but I bet darkness played a role.

Those damn pedestrians need to slow the hell down. We should fight for slower walking speed limits.

That's a pretty cavalier attitude considering someone died.

It is merely a reflection of the same attitude thrown toward cyclists when the public feels affronted by same.

Of course I always find it amusing when cyclists complain about having to slow down to a speed limit, or have to dodge pedestrians... the very complaints motorists make about us.

Bicycles are so quiet, and we are so vulnerable, that defensive cycling is mandatory. I expect not to be heard, and probably not seen, and will still probably run into something or someone that didn't know I was there.

Great, now we're going to have "loud freehubs save lives" crusaders trying to retune their wheels to sound like a Kawasaki on nitro. Invariably, they will be the ones who like to ride through residential neighborhoods at 5AM.

I completely agree. I also think it absolutely kills the fun of riding a bike. You have to brake basically every 5 secs to be ready to avoid a potential situation.

oooops. I shouldn't have said anything. I wouldn't cycle if there was a lot of noise - that's one reason I don't ride a motorcycle.

My new bike came with Mavik 4's and wow they are loud. When on a path and coming up behind a "walker" I just stop peddling and they can usually hear me 10 yards away. If I back spin it's like a warning sound and usually spokes them enough to get out the way.

Frankly I use my squeaky rear brake pads as my "life savers." I don't have to use the rear brake... But when I do...
