I definitely prefer cycling-specific stuff too, but sometimes the prices are outrageous unless they are on sale. The PI windbreaker I saw at REI yesterday was on "sale" for $80 - marked down from $150! way too much - even onsale - for a non-insulated, non-Gore-Tex jacket. And I almost bought it before remembering the Wal Mart one I saw. I may look for a cheaper windbreaker at Nashbar or somewhere - it would be nice to have some rear pockets.

I agree, I probably wouldn't pay $80 for a non-insulated Pearl Izumi windbreaker, either. Have you tried local LBS's? They may have something on clearance.

WalMart is full of "reflective for safety" exercise clothes with that "almost a postage stamp worth of reflector" feature. IMO, if it's not at least 1/2" wide strips front and back, preferably 3/4" or more, and at least 3 inches long, it's not going to help much. Smaller stuff at long distances is way too easily mistaken for broken glass, etc. sparkling in the headlights. By the time a driver is sure it's something more, they're generally close enough to make out the outline without the reflector's help.

Tell that to this year's tennis fashionistas.

Personally I enjoy such colors, but I always ensure it's matched with a drab top or bottom (black/grey tee or shorts) to offset the gaudiness. Which is what they did - imo eye-catching yet not clownish.

The humid weather here is not conducive to multiple layers of clothing.

And just how often do you see such get ups "off court" and in other social settings?

I think that is just the point... cycling gear works just fine as cycling gear... just as football or tennis gear works just fine as the proper apparel for that activity... but when one then engages in activities such as work or socializing... the expectations of others is that you should fit in. (hence the reason some folks wear neckties... a totally impractical garb) Now note that this is the expectation of others. So it really is up to you to decide if your apparel is making the right statements for you and the others around you for the responses you want.

I got a Brooks long sleeve running T shirt from REI that I like. It doesn't have enough reflective material to suit me for biking at night, so I wear a reflective strap/harness over it.

That's quite true - my point is that neon can look good if you don't over do it. Reflective strips... not so much

I have an old Illuminite jacket that I bought for running and use mostly for cycle commuting at night now. There should be some other running or work clothing you can find on the first website above that could work as casual clothing.

I just saw these in my Ben Meadows catalog. A lot cheaper than my Brooks running shirt, with way more reflective material:

I only buy wool, because polyester gets the permanent B.O. stank after a few wears. It's even harder to find bright wool shirts, and they almost always have a premium price. :/

I won't wear wool. I wear a t-shirt, sweatshirt(winter), warm pull-over(winter), gym shorts(winter), biking pants(winter). So, I don't have the b.o. problem with my clothes.

I bought this vest from walmart and it seems to have more than a postage stamp size worth of reflective material:

I think this is more what your looking for? - Safety stores will have a lot more choices than LBS for high-vis wear since that is what they sell.

Cyclist are not construction workers and should not be wearing their gear. Cyclinst need something that is flexible and breathable and construction vests is not it. I just wish high viz cycling gear came in colors besides that dreadful neon green.

Polyester comes in many flavors and like any fabric, some are much cheaper than others. Just look for technical fabrics which wick moisture and have anti-microbial properties. Some polyies have odor right out of the package, but these have no odor whatsoever.

A reflective vest may be covered by a backpack. Backpacks should have reflective material on the rear and sides.
