Stories like this are always a bummer, but reading the comments section always seems to make it so much worse.

At the risk of seeming unsympathetic, why is this posted in the Classic & Vintage section?

That article alone is upsetting. Is that the face of today's journalism? I'd slap whoever wrote that piece of !@#$ in the face.

And I hope that female driver gets sued for what she did/didn't.

That was my reaction, as well. No evidence whatsoever of intelligent life there.

Must be the most redneckiest site I've ever laid eyes on.

Nah; true rednecks are the ones that drift all the way to the far shoulder to pass a bike on a country road, because they're used to tractors or cows being there. OTOH, rural areas around colleges tend to attract the "all hat and no cattle" types like the ones on that site; they find themselves a quarter acre lot out of town, drag a singlewide onto it, pave the driveway so the jacked up brand new "farm truck" never has to touch dirt, nor will their $250 boots be fouled by grass, then call themselves cowboys because they've got a horse in a tiny bolt-up barn kit out behind the trailer.

We've got some that set up about 40 feet off mom's back fence. Used to be a nice quiet, private area back there, but now it's the party spot for all their cowboy-wanna-be buddies that live in town and don't want to risk a noise violation (and probably a bunch of underage drinking busts) at home. OTOH, it's not the first time, and usually within 5 years the trailer will be empty, the previous owner will buy the land back from the bank, sell the trailer and barn for scrap, and the grass will grow back.

Here in the US, the driver of the car and the passenger mom probably wouldn't have even bothered to stop, much less get out, and give the dumbfounding speech. Hopefully that UK law enforcement will be better at identifying the vehicle, the male driver, and the passenger mom than some of our US counterparts.

The people commenting on that thread are the people that cyclists share the road with. And they've got a much bigger weapon.

I can back this up. Out here in this small rural town, even when I'm riding right along the white line, drivers stay behind me until it's safe to completely change lanes and pass. Once in a blue moon someone will squeeze a little quicker and I do have the issue of people thinking I don't "count" at a three or four way stop (i.e., going through instead of letting me take my 'turn', but that's probably just a lack of knowledge more than anything).

Exceptions to every rule of course but I've been blessed to be cycling in a rural area.

Hit an run would have been smarter. Could have used the old "I thought I hit a muffler in the road" defense if the cops ever caught them. Getting out and speaking with the victim, SEEING his condition, then tearing out of there without even a 911 call is head and shoulders above hit and run. That should be some sort of felony abandonment or something.

She probably got back in the vehicle, turned to her kids and said "Oh, he's just fine...told me we could continue to school. Hardly a scratch!"

I'd stay away from that site too, it's just a digital tabloid rag and rather stupid at that.
