walmart gift card and black friday. what bike to get?

each year my job hands out walmart gift cards. they're not for much but combined with black friday/x-mas deals the last couple years, i've picked up a few cheap project bikes even cheaper.

this year i'm looking at three bikes. there's no saying any or all will drop in price over the holidays, but they're more or less the short list.

a 7 speed kent 32

32" Kent KX-7 Men's Cruiser Bike, Silver - Walmart.com

by an odd stroke, i've recently ended up with two single speed versions of this, so i'm also looking at 48 spoke rear hubs to convert one i have. i've taken a liking to big wheel bikes (also have a coker monster), but i like gears. it'd need to be a fairly major price drop (and hope to sell the others for a decent price) to consider it now that i have the single speeds.

a mongoose dolomite (or one of the other geared 26" fat bikes since they sell several now)

mongoose dolomite - Walmart.com

i got a beast two years back that i cut up, and a dolomite last year that is marked to meet my sawzall too. maybe if i got another i'd leave it alone and just let it be a fat cruiser (laughing at myself, though if it were to be the aluminum dk it would be safer since i can't weld aluminum)

last, a mongoose logan

24" Mongoose Logan Boys' All-Terrain Fat Tire Bike, Gray - Walmart.com

to be honest, i want this bike mainly to get the back wheel (and maybe use the front on something else too). i know it's possible to buy the wheels separately if i can get a couple numbers off the frame, but since they don't sell them in the local stores to look, and i can't seem to get the info anywhere else, i may see how low it drops too. assuming it might.

yeah yeah, "walmart bikes are junk"... "wouldn't pay a nickle for one". whatever. what do the fun bike people think? thanks.

Go for the dolomite. It says that it is a steel frame, I bet you could make another beast with that thing. Make a Mad Max Fat tire Monster

I have had a similar thought in the past just to see how bad they are. I scrolled through and saw this one on closeout. It seems above average for the quality of box mart bikes but I still may go in on black Friday and get one and then ride a crit series or something with it just to see how "bad" they really are first hand. Back in High School I worked for a big box store in the sporting goods section. it always seemed to me that the problem with the bikes was assembly and lack of maintenance after purchase rather than components.

right now a 26" fat bike is what i'm leaning towards, but i just saw this last night

27.5" Schwinn Swindler Men's Cruiser, Black - Walmart.com

i don't know much about the 27.5 size though, plus i like gears. it would have to drop way low to get me more interested. it's more something i'd be hoping to come across cheap at a flea market in a year or two. if i found some 27.5 disc brake wheels off something else, it might be interesting for a "flight of the old dog" idea i've had bouncing around in my head.

the sportsman isn't interesting to me. i have an old would tour that would close enough to it for me.

That Swindler is pretty cool. The springer/girter front suspension is actually functional, but the spring is so strong that it takes some heavy pushing to get any movement. Maybe it would be better on a heavier bike?
And you're right, those wheels on the Logan are pretty cool. Give me until the end of the weekend, I should be able to get you some numbers off of one.

that would be great. thanks. let me say in case it needs saying, i'm not trying to get a free wheel by claiming a warranty issue and faking having brought one. they don't seem to want to sell them unless they're for replacement. had to do the same thing to get an extra dolomite wheel.

My thoughts. Almost exactly. Look around on craigslist and you can usually find good deals on much higher quality bikes for the same price as a new wally-world bike.

He could do all that, but it's obvious hs doesn't want to. Seems like ratrodbikes is a better forum for him. I was actually thinking of a fatbike for the snow, seems much better than my DB Response. Funny how they've been to catch on, and Surly has made them for years.

eh... i ended up using the card to get a drill.

never saw any of the bikes i was interested in go on sale. so i'm going to go ahead and eventually add gears to one of my 32's, and i only wanted the logan for the rear wheel anyway. saw another fat bike that actually is a cruiser i like better anyway, so maybe i'll spring for it if/when i have some extra cash.
