Design idea for a bike trailer

I was thinking of using an aluminum ladder as the main frame for a bike trailer. How does a six foot length sound for the main body?

I've got two identical kid bike frames to mount the wheels. I should probably x-brace the frames below the ladder.

I would mount it to my bike on the bottom frame just in front of the rear wheel using some pipe strap and a piece of rubber conveyor belt.

I want to avoid welding.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thats actually a pretty good idea. Tell me more about how you are going to attach the wheels.

The hitch shouldn't be a problem, you could attach a piece of 1x1 aluminum square tube to the ladder at an angle so it hits the chainstay, then bolt a piece of rubber conveyer (or car tire, as many people use) to it, and strap/clamp that to the chainstay.

peace,
sam

6 feet sounds a bit long unless you plan to haul refrigerators. Try 3 feet at first. Bolt the downtubes and rear dropouts to the sides of the ladder. Bolt another section of the ladder from the downtube bolts to the seat tubes to keep the bikes parallel. Clamp an aluminum pipe from the pulling bikes' seat tube to the handlebars of the two kids bikes supporting the ladder. The connection to the handlebars should act as an Ackerman linkage so the outside bike on the trailer will steer into the turn to prevent skidding. Check out a tad-pole type trike for ideas.

The ladder idea is great.

For the wheels: why not just slide a threaded rod the size of a bicycle wheel axle through one of the ladder's step hole. Keep the rod in place with shims, two large washers on each side or something similar, then use standard cone nuts and washers to fit standard bicycle wheels?

I used an old card table frame to make mine.
