climbing on a chopper

Hi all, I just bought yet another chopper bike and just wondering what size front sprocket would be a good starting point for trying to make a Stingray clone capable of climbing moderately steep hills, it has an 18 tooth rear sprocket and currently a 44 tooth front ring.
It was a sweet buy they were clearing a left over one for $34.95 au at the local Target store. I have stripped all but 2 small flame stickers on the rear stays and it looks great in gloss black.
One of the other choppers that I use on road has a small electric assist to allow hill climbing without blowing out a knee and I have considered doing the same to the new one but would like to try and keep it HPV only.
I took it for a 25K spin last night on the bike track and it rides brilliantly but is definately to high geared for hill climbing.

Look for a 39T on ebay, or see if your LBS has one in their crap bin. Shouldn't be too hard to find.
