my first long bike
 

i rescued two almost identical 20" girls bike frames to use in the construction of my first long bike. the seat tube of the front frame is the same outside diameter as the steer tube on the fork i removed from the rear frame, so im gonna attach the frames there, and fabricate brackets to attach the front frame to the rear frame vie the rear drop outs on the front frame and the bottom bracket of the rear frame.

questions,is this a good way to do it or should i re-install the fork to the rear frame and bolt the rear frame's forks to the rear drop outs of the front frame? this would make the bike reeeeaallly long, and it would have a pitot point at this connections, is that ok? when running the chain should i install something to help keep chain tension along that length, or maybe leave the cranks on both the front and back frame to use as a guide for the chain?

any help would be appreciated, ive never built one these before , and wouldnt be attempting it now if werent for y'all posting pics of weird bikes on this site!!!!

See my long bike with pictures posted on 7-3-07. This added 15 inches to the total length and gave me a 51 inch wheelbase. I have a 5 speed freewheel at the rear and started with a 36 tooth chainwheel but now have a 44 tooth. 44 tooth is as high as I can go because of frame clearance. I needed no chain tensioner when I first set it up as a single speed. I attached the rear frame at the bottom bracket with some old rusty bearings, large washers and an extra front axle I had laying around. I cut the top tube and fastened it to the seat clamp. It is very rigid.

Take a look at the chain bogey wheel used on a long wheelbase bent or a delta trike, it may give you some ideas!:D

Someone on ratrod bikes made one with two BMXs.

Mine is made out of two BMX bikes. I cut the head tube off the rear frame and removed the seat stays of the front frame. I attached the down/top tubes of the rear frame to the seat tube of the front frame and I bent the chainstays of the front frame in and welded them to the downtube of the rear bike. It works great! It's way long, I had to tip the ape hangers way down even with the stem flipped around. Get ready for a sore ass, since you won't be supporting any of your weight with the pedals or bars. (I assume you'll be sitting on the rear frame, with the cranks on the front bottom bracket)

yep, thats how ill mount her. this is gonna be tricky when i get to it cuz its gonna be a bolt together project, i dont weld or have any of the equipment to weld, so im gonna have to get krafty! that one of the things i did most about messin w/ bikes! i doubt ill ever get a welder, im always droppin money on a new tool for this or that, and im pretty sure my next "big" purchase will be a sandblaster with its own barrel. man i could sure use one of those!

Hmmm, without a welder eh? That's gonna be interesting. You could shorten the top and downtubes a bit so that the dropouts of the front bike line up with the down tube better and then just drill a hole in the downtube and bolt the dropouts on. I'm not sure how you'll attach the front though, make sure you let us know how you end up doing it.

hmmm, hadnt thought of attaching them that way. the seat tube on the front frame has the same outside diameter of the steer tube on the fork i took off the rear frame, i have some collors that fit so i could bolt it together there, and i could convince the rear dropouts to of the front frame to connect to the bottom bracket of the rear frame via some braces....i hope! im having a hard time finding the time to finish other project that are almost done so that i can get to it!!! maybe ill make it ease on myself and just re-install the front fork to the rear frame and bolt it to the rear dropouts of the front frame, deeep sighhh
