    More of life's sidetracks...sorry it's going slow.

Nothing much has happened all summer as I've had to repair Tempest and Germaine a few times to keep moving, a lot of stressful but necessary things to do about the house, the money isn't going far enough and i had to catch up after the repairs, also an uncle passed away (from leukemia).

Fall has definitely set in and the windy, rainy days make it tough to go out and work on the bikes. I'm concentrating on getting the living room in shape so I can work on them indoors and it kind of puts a kink in trying to strip and repaint a Higgins I want to give to somebody.

So I continue to work on the house and putting things in order again while finishing audiotaping projects and selling or trading audio gear. Germaine is still at the LBS a month later awaiting a pedal stub the sheared at the crank arm thread to be removed...it apparently broke a bit and now I wonder if I have to wait another month or find a used crank. When one bike is down and the other is as well it gets to be a pain doing much, as I don't always walk so well and finiding a ride for larger tasks is hard.

If you're reading, I still miss you, East Hill. I hope you are doing fine. I have always appreciated your guidance and encouragement.

    A quarter-year?

Fear not, I'm not done yet...the weather is clearing and it's about time to go back to work, Rollfast, Schwinn and Higgins...that's a ladies' and a gift. The Ross is gone, given to a friend who can finish it for his girlfriend, it's formerly rusty sister the J.C. Higgins Jetflow(?) is a surprise for a person I just decided to give it to when done ut of the blue a year back. In the meantime I've put a tank and fenders on Germaine, new rims (black) and pedals and am waiting to be able to afford a police style windshield to add to her with a big Ford fender headlamp bezel (and mount the Honda saddlebags)...then I should be done with Germaine...

I'll get a couple-three pictures up later today, the sun is just rising right now.

This isn't the thread that never ends...

    but nothing is really happening.

I replace tires and tubes, sell a spare part I'll never get around to using on anything now and then...so is it a spat of DOLDRUMS or is the world simply falling apart faster than me, hobbywise, and for all the things I like and which keep me feeling creative and foolishly young that are seemingly slipping away from me locally?

I had to figure out if I would be able to change my Windows and use what I have...now the lone printer cartridge refill guy I have near me has had a heart attack and is planning on retiring soon...

I wonder if I'll have sources for parts for my old cassette and reel to reel recorders or even close access to electronics parts...

I've had three family members (dad, grandma and an uncle) pass away in the last 2 and a half years and mother had back surgery for placing rods to fix her bad discs, my brother in law (of the sister that lives near mom) almost lost an eye and is finally back at his old job...even my other sister's youngest tried to commit suicide (fortunately I think intervention was successful)...

Each spring the entire internet seems to go on an insane campaign to mess up what we are comfortable with and aggravate people to no end.

I'd love to finally get the fairings on my bikes and finish wiring them and even with the scratches call them done...they are me and I am no different.

It's hard dealing with 15 different things at once and just moving forward. I can't do it and it's certainly only a temporary celebration to accomplish one thing or another lately.

I still assert that I'm neither suicidal nor homicidal, so the SOBs are lucky and will just have to put up with me a while...

I've been a late bloomer, a late re-adopter and low on resources if long on innovations.

So I could wrap it up for this thread, but I won't for now. Just remember what I wrote here and forgive my slow pace, if you will.

This is still for East Hill. Margaret, you are an inspiration. Thank you always, Steven

Do you know what ever happened to East Hill? I know she's not around anymore. Did she leave or was there more?

Another goodie arrived and this one brings me even closer to finishing Tempest, in a BIG way...

It's a Cycle Sound stereo fairing!

Things are kind of slow here on the bike front...I've had to make a lot more repairs than progress on both bikes yet while things are a bit 'pedestrian' here and there are no spectacular fairings and lights or fanciful flights of late, there is life, wear and tear, the passing of time and people.

My remaining grandparent (paternal grandmother) passed away over the summer and was placed next to het beloved first husband, who has waited for her since 1987. I had strong and caring grandparents and the finality of it all is a sad but treasured milestone.

Life, and bicycling have been all over the place in the last few months. I won't hide that my A1C is up over 12 now and I'm not the spry pup I once was...I met a friend the other day who almost died without even know he HAD diabetes, and his initial blood glucose reading was OVER 900 with an A1C of over 18! The karaoke jockey at the bar I like to sing at told me that his blood pressure got up to 191/121 when he was recently on vacation and he was almost certain to have a stroke had it been worse...

    YIKES!

A lot to work on, and more than just having a tire bubble the Schwinn and the Rollfast got a cut tire and then the used replacement found a carpet nail...and sealed somehow.

An expensive month, and it continues as I broke four spokes on the rear wheel of the Schwinn and it needs trueing...

And a lot of things to do in all aspect of housework and getting the 2014 Christmas cards and CDs for one of my audio forums readied...

I'll post more very soon although it's mostly anecdotal.

I'm hoping to finish building the new bike stand I made in a makeshift fashion with two pallets and several bits of scrap wood and the long rubber strip I had at the front of the house to free the bikes from the antenna mast and weeds and allow safer entry from the back of the yard plus allow netter visibility from my bedroom.

Hmmm...time to charge all three of my camera batteries!

Winter is over, so they say.

It's time to finish some bike work. Paring other hobbies down to size and their associated items to things that mattered the most took a lot of time and hard work.

I've been riding Tempest and Germaine still but during winter the Rollfast sits out the snow. Let's see what happens.

MVC-035S.JPG Time to get the Honda Aspencade saddlebags on Germaine. I ordered a new pair of crossbrace handlebars for Tempest to mount the stereo fairing and Hondaline fairing from Bicyclebones and a replacement rear rack for the Schwinn to match the old one.

That is the paperboy rack that's been on Germaine, dremeled down.

I have to dremel a little more and do some thinking. Now I wait for parts and work around the house.

And here I am at the end of the month, with parts partly installed and those crossbraced handlebars from Bicyclebones and the second try for the repro fender light from a member of the CABE, after applying a bit of electrical tape to try and prevent the battery terminal in the back from shorting the batteries and heating the whole thing. And, right on cue, the Schwinn's rear tire develops a cut on the sidewall just above the tread.

Tire #3 for the year will have to be purchased. PHUN, but we are on our merry way to the finish line now.

    FINALLY.

    ACTUALLY.

The new bars are shimmed but it isn't quite enough fully tightened to hold them in place so after I find the position they need to be in for the fairing I'll wrap some electrical tape around the center and place it inside the shim...that ought to do the trick.

    MVC-089S.JPG MVC-090S.JPG MVC-091S.JPG

The left grip is on wrong, turned too far inward.

I saved the old bars. They were a replacement for the original ones.

Britney Spears time -OR- OOPS, I Did It Again...

I got the gooseneck opened and the handlebars slipped to the side and the shims out. Gout tape beneath the shims over the center and got the neck wedged a little more to tap the shims through....still wasn't staying put much better. I couldn't tighten as much as I needed to so I too the closed end of a 9/16 wrench and tapped it around with a hammer.

I never got it tightened all the way and then at one point the bolt STOPPED and the bars slipped down, now looser than ever and I have NO bikes to ride until Friday.

The neck is still not completely tightened and maybe I was supposed to put the tape on top?

    Gee whiz.

Still going, and one on the way...

Gonna have a new arrival next month, an oldie but goodie.

It's almost like Tempest in that I had no idea at first but it has no headbadge or chainguard so I'll have to do some sleuthing.

    It's a non-Schwinn cantilevered 26" and it's for ME.

Comes with wheels and all for $40 and shipping, a Hawthorne tank ('bugeye' light type) and a new seat for the Schwinn are also coming as well as some lights to check out from Bicyclebones. The rest courtesy of members of The C.A.B.E. where I also have fun.

This time I'm going to keep the red and accent the front with black in the traditional vintage fashion. I have chainguards a plenty, if it fits I may even go nuts with a 50s Huffy guard. This is my winter project and major self-given Christmas present.

No name yet, you have to see it in person to know that...I'm old-fashioned that way.

New old bike.jpg Wheels.jpg The tank, tank.jpg and the seat from this very Rollfast Seat.jpg

I've got more hardware in this month as well to help mount my generator lighting on this and the Schwinn.

I had enough to get more of my other vice, new old blank cassettes, LPs and reel recordings! I also sent a bunch more food to Mom to help with Christmas dinner, canned vegetables, the stuffing, and red potatoes (because the glycemic index is lower than russets and they make good mashed taters, I'm diabetic as well).

Well, a change in plans...the original bike was accidentally sold.

But I'm getting that Rollfast now, minus the original tank and with the spare and seat. Just add wheels.

More on that next month when it actually reaches my door.

    Chapter IV: A New Build...

Chapter I: Tempest (50s twin bar middleweight)
Chapter II: Germaine (1995 Schwinn Classic Cruiser)
Chapter III: Kayleigh (early 1960s Western Flyer)

Here is the new Rollfast twin cantilever frame I bought from a member of The C.A.B.E. and what I am going on as an example, from the web:

    My New Bike.jpg

    From The Web.jpg

The original tank stayed with the seller and I took the Hawthorne 'bugeye' tank he had instead.

For tank lights I bought a pair of Ross or similar tanklights from Bicyclebones.

I may have all the parts except a rear fender and braces lined up now. I also need the rear arm mount and front mount for the chainguard, which is the same of similar to the one on the green web bike.

    Chainguard and seat

    Chainguard%20and%20seat.jpg

Frame with front wheel from my other Rollfast

    Tempests%20wheel%20fits%20(1).jpg

The Hawthorne 'bugeye' tank I took instead of the original, from the same seller

    The tank lights

And since I joined the Two-Rollfast Club, I decided I needed the T-SHIRT!

    Really good news...

The good news is that Tempest has her crossbraced handlebars properly shimmed and the chainguard needs a little shoring up and THEN I will start to finish outfitting her and be done with the stuff I wanted to do other than some touching up.

The LBS guy had to replace the stem, but most of the tube hardware is fairly new and not stock anyhow. I will get Tempest back next week.

I had Germaine's rear tube replaced (slow leak) and I'm back on the road again. The only downside has been that I had to postpone the deal for tires and rims. Hopefully I can still get that done in early March.

It will get into the 50s by next week, according to the weather forecast, so I will have some fun and I suppose I ought to finally get Tempest The Grey Bike Grows Up Part V done and on You Tube this month to update the two and introduce Rosa, my latest Rollfast in progress.

Rosa, my new Rollfast frame is almost ready to roll!

I got my Hunt-Wilde black grips yesterday and some Wellgo BMX pedals that I installed today.

The money got sent out for the fenders, front basket, tires and rims, and I have the chain already.
