question for the masses: would it be similaly efficient to make a turbine style prop out of ply-wood? it would be cheaper, but, would it work as well?

Ideally, it would be shaped like an airplane propellor. If I understood from that video, he said it was made of foam with fiberglass covering. Light weight would be very helpful for balancing and in the event you slung a blade off. I've read in the past of people whittling windmill propellors out of solid wood, but that seems like a lot of work.

It would be cooler if we could see that ushrouded prop hitting something large and immovable, and not human.

I can already think of one improvement. Duct that prop and make it a ducted fan. It would result in more thrust and keep curious yahoos from getting sucked into the prop.

I could hear the reports now "This just in, maniac bicycle builder or maniac man KILLER, you be the judge as you can watch this LIVE feed of little children's limbs being torn off by the deathly blades of his EVIL contraption!"

After writing that I kinda want one...

By the way, have seen the video before, but it's still cool. That bike is totally pointless, but totally cool, too. Ducting the fan would be pointless, as it would detract from the dangerbike aspect of it!
