Cruiser Frame

Hi,

Has anyone chopped a beach cruiser frame? I'd love to see what you've come up with. I have a good frame from an old cruiser of mine and I want to turn it into something speedy and comfy but not quite sure where to start. Has anyone put speeds on instead of a fixie? Thanks.

we've made swing bikes out of old cruisers

Okay now.
Coaster brake does not equal fixed gear.
I'm not sure if you can really chop up a frame to make it more speedy, maybe make it look cool, but really the components would dictate more how fast it can go.

sure you can add gearing to a single speed cruiser, throw on an Internal Geared Hub. I run a shimano nexus 3 speed and its pretty nice...they make a 7 speed as well. Or you can go cheaper and get a Sturmey Archer IGH...

I suppose you could also throw on a freehub with a cassette and spread out the rear forks to make it fit and then drill out some holes for a dérailleur, but that could be difficult to adjust.

On the other end you could also change the crankset and put a triple chainring on the front... front dérailleurs are comparatively easy to put on a bike thats never had em.

how about some pics of your project? :)

i can think of only one thing that would make any cruiser lighter is speed holes in the frame

I put a Shimano 3 speed hub on my Schwinn

Thanks to everyone for their help. Have you guys ever seen cruisers with DF components? Would it even work with the way the frame is?

i don't get at all how this would work or what it does. the smaller gear would be turning the opposite direction? plz xplain!

When you pedal backwards, it engages the other freewheel, because the chain is reversed.
It's called retro-direct.

Just for information, Shimano don't make the 7 speed Nexus hub any more, only the 8 (and the 3).
