Really old Alt-Bikers
Anybody heard of these people? Do you know if any of their descendants are still in the Alt-Bike field?

That's totally awesome. There's been a couple of videos posted that included it- check on youtube, maybe. They were generic alt-bike videos from way back when that included little short clips of this contraption.

Here's the video:

Every odd bike from today is in there in 1939-1943- Tandems, tallbikes, clownbikes, unicycles, ultimate wheels, giant bikes, rowbikes, recumbents, rollerblades, bicycle trailers, etc.

I wrote a little about the Steinlauf family on my website:
https://www.chicagofreakbike.org/2006...amily-were.php
Those articles were given to me by a Chicago old-timer. He didn't know anything about it. Even though I roamed the streets of Chicago for eight years looking for freakbikes, and hearing about and tracking down old freakbikes (I mean that's what the website is about), I never heard or found any evidence of them. But in a city of 3 million people, who knows? I was always surprised by the bikes I ran across.
If you click the link you can see more pictures and read an article about them.

You might try calling AM YISRAEL. I found a hit for "Fred Steinlauf" on one of thier PDF newsletters. I think he is dead though, (Yahrzeits?), so you would have to ask about his kids. I guess you might have to ask some questions to see if he is the right Fred.

I mapped the shop at 3851 Ogden and the Synagoge and they are only 23 miles apart.
