Shopping bag over saddle

Why do folks put a shopping bag over saddle?
To protect the saddle from rain or to hide it from potential thieves?
Must be some other reason, too.

I think some seats will soak up the rain, making them, and your bum, stay wet for a long time. Those are the seats I think that need the bag.

Though I guess it could make people think you have a crappy seat, so don't give it a second look. So it would be used to hide a nice seat.

The only times I see bags over seats are on X-mart bikes and homeless peoples bike seats.

My seat does not hold water, so i just wipe it with my hand when its wet and go.

Its nice to have a bone dry saddle. There's an instructable (on instructables.com) about vacuum forming a "bicycle seat condom", but instead of looking for the machine I just took a slice of oiled leather or some stuff and attached it to my saddle bag, folding it over and securing it over the front part. I found this waterproof drawstring bag at goodwill that helps protect ice from forming on my saddle (which happens if it's below-zero outside.)
