Want to build a trike-tank for my special needs 13 year old Help please

I'm looking to create a new trike for my son. He is invited to do a rails to trails ride with the boy scouts next spring and I want to get a jump on setting him up for it. He has used a Worksman adult sized trike for street and park riding but I dont think it will handle the rails to trail deal. Has anyone else created anything like this?

My Goals:
1) To make a front wheel drive trike that uses a mountain bike or an OCC Stingray rear end for the driving/steering.
2) Keep it under 50 pounds net weight
3) Be off road compatible
4) Be able to fold the rear end to make it more compact for storage/transport not a requirement but if a little careful planning makes it possible why not.

This project has been tickling my brain for a while. If there is two front wheels that are driven & steering , the drivetrain becomes heavy and complicated. How rough is the terrain and how step are the hills? Maybe a sidecar arrangement based on a standard mountain bike has potential.

I just bought from Ebay, a gocart front end married to the rear of a suspension bike. This might be the answer. My first step has been to chop down the front end to make it more comfortable and lighter. The new steerer, stem, handlebar combo will also provide attachment points for accessories and cables/wiring if/when they are added. See pictures at homebrewhpv.blogspot.com
