    Converting a Ladies to a Men's Bike

    Has any of you handy welders converted a ladies/mixte to a men's bike? I'm looking for a project bike. But the price of men's bikes are way higher than a comparable women's bike.

    Too many to list, some I built myself including the frame. I "do" ~ Human-Only-Pedal-Powered-Cycles, Human-Electric-Hybrid-Cycles, Human-IC-Hybrid-Cycles, and one Human-IC-Electric-3way-Hybrid-Cycle

    Never done it specifically for that purpose but if its just the top bar your worried about for strength reasons shouldn't be too hard to fit and weld a top bar in. You do realize of course that modern women's bikes do have geometry differences as well to fit slight differences in body proportions compared to men (women usually have longer legs and shorter torso-s then men of the same height). When I cut up old bikes and re-weld them together I usually do a whole lot more to them then just add a top tube so I can't completely answer your question, heck most of the time by the time I'm done you have no idea what the original bike(s) looked like based on the end result.

    Hardest part at least in my mind would be he re-paint job. But then I hate paint work so much that anymore unless I'm just doing something simple like just fixing a stress crack or something I mainly use stainless steel instead of regular steel with the appropriate welding rod so I don't have to paint except for the few steel bike donor parts such as the bottom bracket and head-tube and even then I've figured a way around that and a way to do them with stainless stock and its worth the extra work in some cases compared to just using donor parts.

    I don't know how to weld aluminum and I'm strictly a steel guy, so can't tell you how hard it would be to do with aluminum, but at least you wouldn't have to paint aluminum either. Not quite stainless but pretty close for corrosion resistance.

    I was referring to older Klunker/Beach Cruiser type bikes. Old Schwinn women's bikes are sometime half of what a similar men's version is.

    same for me. there were other things about the bike i liked that made me work with it, but it did end up going from a womens to a mens more or less

    I like to say I have but the bike I used was once a 63 Columbia cantilevered mens frame that someone butchered into a ladies but I altered top bars back into a mans bike.

    Another was a Tyler frame that I cut off the top tube and bent back the seat stays on a lowered seat tube.

    I don't refer to my womans bike as a womans bike,,, I say stepthru frame,,,,it's a womans schwinn admiral that I found in a dumpster with no seat , brakes or pedals,, after I replaced all that was missing it turned into a real nice riding bike with 7 speeds, red rims and a real nice white saddle,, it was free for notin???
