While I am very impressed with Casati's framebuilding, I am less so with their bike buildup skills. :(

As I was only dealing remotely with them, I sent a late Email reminding them that a 13-29 cassette was ordered, as it was not shown on the actual order form they received from the shop where I bought it. They responded affirmatively. But I now find that they actually mounted a short-cage rear der, which Campa says is a no-no. My guess is that Casati actually had mounted a different cassette, and forgot to change the der from short to medium cage when they put on the 13-29.

Here is what Campa says in their Q&A:
Q: On a "double" drivetrain, can I use the standard (short cage) 10s Record (or 10s Chorus) rear derailleur with the 13-29 cassette?
A: No, because the cage is too short to function properly when the chain is crossed. It is necessary to use the dedicated medium cage rear derailleur.

So now I have to decide what to do, and am asking for expert advice from Forum readers. I have gone through the rear der adjustments, and shifting is perfect under the circumstances in which I plan to use it. That is, using the low eight sprockets with the 50 chainring, and the high eight with the 34 chainring. That means that the largest sprocket to be used with the 50 is the 23, well within the limits suggested in the Q&A (implicitly, as 26 is the largest "crossing" possible on a 13-26 cassette). I did have to back the cage off a little to be sure to eliminate any interference with the 29, but all seems to function well.

Can anyone supply any helpful and/or soothing words about keeping the short cage? I really do not want to switch if I don't have to.

Thanks...Gary

Thanks...GarySo what's the question? You are officially exceeding the wrap capacity spec for the short cage. Size the chain to handle the big/big, 'just in case',and then stay out of the small cogs when in the small ring if the short cage won't wrap all the chain. It works. A medium cage works better and you loose nothing by uing it.

OK, thanks. I was not sure if there were some issues I just didn't see.

Since 50+13 and 34+29 are the same, I am not sure why they like the former but not the latter.
