Triathlon - Workouts on vacations?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm in the middle of planning a possible week-long vacation to Budapest, Hungary and was curious what kind of workouts people manage to do on vacations - especially to places overseas. Running is fairly straightforward (although I'm sure research is required to determine good areas to run in), but it would be nice to get a bike ride and swim in at least once during that week. What do you do? Thanks -
Get a folding bike and find a hotel with a jacuzzi.
Seriously, though... if you really don't want to worry about it, you can always buy a folding bike or get those S & S couplers put on a bike and bring one with you. No worries!
Find a hotel with a pool or swim in the nearest body of water that allows swimming.

Scout things out in advance by checking to see what facilities are available at the Hotel. Also, will you be meeting up with anyone? If so there's a great source of information :)

one week?!
seriously, i would not worry about training. way too much hassle, plus you can just kick back and enjoy the vacation...
it's really not worth the hassle organizing a bike for just one week. on top of that, you won't lose your form in one week of not doing anything.
take your running shoes with you and if you feel up to it go for a little run or two. should they have a little gym with an indoor bike or even a pool, that's great. but organizing all of this stuff is really not worth it...that's my opinion and my experience anyway!
enjoy hungary! they have delicious food. and in case your single: the ladies are rather charming as well...:)

Ah, but I'm a lady myself :)
I tend to stay at places a little more budget than those that come with an exercise room of some sort. The only reason I was mildly worried about things is that this is a week before my first triathlon this year (and only my second overall). After a bit of searching, it sounds like there may be some cool lakes nearby to swim in - I worry less about biking. I always like to go for a run in new places as it gets you familiar with your surroundings but I haven't done this while traveling abroad. Thanks for the tips!

oh...ups! :)
ok one week before a race is not that good of course. the good thing though is that you can start tapering. make sure you make the last week at home count and then put in whatever you can fit into your stay there.
you should also remember that because your traveling eastbound and there'll be a timedifference of at least 7 hours you will experience jetlag for 1-3 days. some people aren't up for much exercise during that time, others don't have any problem whatsoever with it...
have fun in budapest and good luck with that race then. keep us posted about both if you have the time! :)
PS: you might want to reconsider about the ladies...hungarian men are not known for their good looks...*lol*

Pack your running shoes and get out early so you won't get the wrath of the wife? :)
Seriously, you can pretty much run anywhere. The concigere's are usually very helpful with setting up a suitable running path..
Tri-Berk,
What Audiojan said! I always run in different cities. 30 years an no problems with the locals. Generally, even when in the so-called "seedier" parts of town, people are friendly to runners. Plus, a five mile run starting in the city center of a European town is a great way to discover interesting things on your trip that the guidebooks don't address. As to biking or swimming it's tougher, but the train stations in Switzerland still have free bikes to use that are quaint and fun.

Completely forgot to answer the question regarding what to do for a bike... Only a day later... Most cities in Europe will have a decent bikeshop where you can rent a bike. This might be your best option. The hotel should be able to point out a good pool where you can swim laps.
Add the cost of airfare, hotel, food, bike rental, pool fee, etc. Thank god for those runs! If not, you wouldn't have time to see any of the city! :)
