I just bought a wheelset off ebay, and they have DT Onyx center lock hubs. Some reviews on MTBR.com complain about freehub failure and slow engagement. Now I'm just wondering if anybody is using this hub, and what their personal experience is.

THanks

Haven't used them, but review by conjecture places them above the XT's. They have a faster engagement point (18 I believe) and I think are lighter @ .75pnds(xt's are notorious for being cheap and strong...but heavy like bull @ 1pnd)

If that makes it worth it to you then they are a pretty proven hub. You won't notice much with the engagement as that isn't much of an improvement. At the price you could like get hopes which are a signifigant upgrade with 36points of engagement and again lighter.

Thats what I responded to phantomcows same question a few months ago. As for complaints, as I stated I have never used them. In theory, lighter with more engagement, would be better, but that could be a weakness.

The wheelset deal I found on ebay may not come through :( The seller said he only ships to the USA, but he had Canada listed as one of the two shipping destinations. So hopefully I'll be able to convince him to ship them to me. $159 US for the DT 4.1D Rims on Onyx hubs seems like a steal to me.

Otherwise, I may buy the set of Rhyno Lites with Deore Rotors for $126CAD from bikeroom and buy a lighter setup during the summer.

You're soo right about ebay, it is slow & frustrating

I hate ebay :).. if you calculate YOUR time based on 15$ an hour (low estimate) and calculate how much time you (or anyone) would spend looking for great deals. Those great deals for most ebay shoppers would be evened out by time wasted trying to find stuff.

That aside, some people pull it off, I am just to lazy to bother and my time is worth too much :)

Ive been running one on the rear for over a year, and it still spins as fast as it did when I got it without any servicing to it. Its not very loud, and the engagement is kind of slow but its a pretty durable hub. For the price your getting the wheelset at, it sounds like a steal.....roll with it :D

My time is precious during the summer because I usually find pretty good software jobs. During the year though, I get bored studying and just look for things I dont need on ebay. You can say ebaying is a hobby or some sort.hahhaha

I'll be happy if this deals actually comes through, if not...no biggie

I want to get them, but the seller may not ship to Canada even though I offered him my home phone #

Here is what the seller is saying

This is beacuse of the box size and it will only ship Economy Parcel Post which takes 4-6 weeks. This is why I will not ship to Canada or anywhere else besides the USA on this item. I clearly marked this auction this way for this just reason.

I told him I'm fine with 4-6 weeks because I dont have my brakes or rotors yet, and we'll see what he says....I have my fingers crossed as of now....

How is the engagement compared to Shamino hubs?? Say a XT or LX model. I'm perfectly happy with the engagement time on Shamino stuff, so if it's not any slower, I'd be perfectly happy...
