Yes, it is possible to disassemble the pedal and remove the platform. You may need to have spacers to put in its place on the axle.

Alternatively you could cut and grind the spacers from the existing platforms.

I have tried before just in maintenance(I love having the platforms on) and they are seriously made to stay on there. The operation is a waste of effort as far as I am concerned, since you can get equivalent uncaged pedals for about 20-30 bucks. The quality is in the cage design.
