How do you get google maps to "reveal" area 51?

OK I suck at this. Try:

It shows satelite images of area 51 with some interesting structures.

Uhm, pictures of the Groom Lake area have been around since the late 60s, and more recent higher-res images were taken in the late 90s by the Ikonos satellite.
These images have not been restricted in any way, suggesting it's not a big deal anymore. Any secret hardware will be indoors anyway when low-orbit satellites are overhead.

Go here for good pics and resources:

Here's a question: Why doesn't Google put a scale bar on their maps and satellite images?

CdCf
04-18-05, 01:29 PM
If the images are the latest Ikonos ones, they're 1 m/pixel.
I.e, if one image is 1000x1000 pixels, it covers an area of 1x1 km (1 km^2).

Right, but some of the "satellite" imagery is at varying resolution.

I would think that a scalebar is a standard on maps.

Ok, I just had a look myself.
The images are quite low-res and heavily compressed (ugly edges).

wow, some areas have some sweet satellite quality. I just looked at my uncles yard in California from here. Looked at the beach where I first kissed my wife in La Jolla. Looked at my dad's farm in Kentucky and looked at the switchbacks I rode on a tour in the Sedona, AZ region. Too fun. How have I been unaware of this tool for so long?

Some people say there's what looks like two F-22 raptors parked southwest of the blackbirds.
I'd wet myself if I drove into that facility by accident... that is if I made it in at all.

Uhm, that's Edwards AFB, not Groom Lake...

And the great oval seems to be a test track.
There's even what looks like a motocross sand track with series of jumps inside the oval, just north of the "admin area" outside.

My guess is it's this:

No, that's not groom lake. The first link is groom lake.

You can't even get close enought to consider it an accident. The fences are so far out all you see is vehicles and scary well armed guys if you're near the fence lines. Flew by the area on the Harley a few years back. Didn't even think about stopping. Mostly you'll see what look to be regular fencing with Government property signs on them. We did have two planes come over the mountains and run parrellel with the highway for a while but that's common all through Nevada, Utah and Arizona anyway. Unless you're dumb enough to get near the fence. Things (cameras?) start moving and you may get a visit. We only stopped in the little crappy towns near by to gas up the Hogs. I'd give me right arm (OK maybe left) to get a full hands on tour of that place. That would be my only incentive to run for President someday.

Edwards AFB doesn't seem to be that secret.
A friend of mine in Colorado got a short tour of some facilities late last year.
And he's just an ordinary guy in his early 20s.
I think he got to know someone there when he was looking for info regarding the XB-70 project.

Ehm, no...

First of all, the oval is north of Edwards AFB in California, not Groom Lake in Nevada.
And second, it's outside the Edwards area, so it doesn't belong to the base.
And third, I've already linked to a text that I think explains what the oval track is - a Hyundai test track. No aliens, unless they're aliens from Korea... :)

Nice job spotting those, but I'm afraid they're actually KC-135's of the 92nd Air Refueling Wing. Those arranged north-south look funny due to foreshortening. To see a lot of B-52's, check out this 1992 photo (http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.aspx?T=1&S=10&X=2581&Y=17786&Z=12&W=2&ref=F|B-52+Aircraft%2c+Davis-Monthan+AFB%2c+Tucson%2c+Arizona) of Davis-Monthman AFB on terraserver. Newer USGS photos show most of those have since been recycled.

Looking around the photo with the two SR-71's, I'm pretty sure I saw one F-22, but the plane parked nearest to it looked like an F-15. I understand most of the currently in-service F-22's are stationed in Florida. I'll have to see if I can find them.

Indeed there are quite a few B-52's, but not nearly as many as 10 years before and a lot of the remaining ones are in various stages of disassembly. There's a little bit of nearly everything else there, too.

I think there was some disarmament treaty that made them destroy it out in public so foreign satellite could see that they really destroyed the planes. Could be wrong about that one.

Those highway pictures are ridiculous. The token civil engineer in the lab loved 'em.

I don't know the story on the B-52's. I knew they retired a ton of them after the breakup of the USSR because they weren't needed. I assumed this was just recycling to get a little bit of money back on them. The return isn't bad. I've helped dismantle trailer homes and recycle the aluminum in those. Usually get about $200. You multiply $0.25/lb by 150000 lbs per plane and you get a lot of money.
