Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Hal @ Bicycle Habitat is THE MAN

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
So my roommate borrowed my old craptastic Bikes By George fixie awhile back, having never ridden fixed before. He's booking it down Lafayette Street, thinking he's the king of the world. Then he tries to stop pedalling. The bike, of course, does not want him to stop pedaling. So it flips him over the handlebars and crashes itself into the curb.
The front wheel got pretty mashed up, but I let the thing sit in the closet, putting off getting it fixed because I'd just got my shiny new IRO.
So today I finally take the wheel off and walk it over to Habitat. I walk in, Hal recognizes me, and says, "what have you got for me?"
I say: "a challenge."
He takes a look at the wheel in my hand, and his face falls. Laughing, he says, "this may be one challenge I fail."
Well, I hand it to him, and he looks at it for a few moments, then declares, "I'm going to do this redneck."
Let's hear that again:
"I'm going to do this redneck."
He then proceeds to BASH THE WHEEL ON THE GROUND SEVERAL TIMES AS HARD AS HE CAN!
A few more minutes in the truing stand, and the sonnufabeaach is as true as the day I bought it.
Hell, I'll pay $13.04 anyday to watch a baddass dreadlocked balding white man bash a bicycle wheel into shape. I even got a wheel straightened out of the deal.
He needs to start a clothing line with his face on t-shirts and messenger bags. Can somebody at least make his visage into an alleycat spoke card or something?

Hal is the MAN, no doubt. What do you think of the new guy at the shop, Eric? He smells like he has a bunch of miles on him.

Hal built my Rockhopper and Langster.
He's the only good thing going at Bike Habitat.
I haven't met Eric. Do you know when he works?

I was there on Sunday and some girl came in saying her back wheel was crooked, and so Hal took it off and said, "you're tire was hit by a car, probably while you had it locked up somewhere. I have to reverse the damage now." and he then proceeded to slam the wheel as hard as he could against the floor. He then looked at the girl and said, "I just saved you at least $50."

both eric and hal have a lot of knowledge. good resources. sometimes that shop is disorganized though, and people are screwing around a lot. that kinda turns me off and so i don't really go there anymore. too many times i had to wait while the employees played around in the back.

Is he a wrench or Dr House from Fox's TV show?

I saw Eric there on two consecutive Tuesdays. So, I would say Tuesday. I have seen the shoprats fooling around too. I just grab a full carbon Trek and ask if I can put it on my new Trek cc. No better way to attract a rat than with cheese! :D

and people are screwing around a lot.
I'd be suspicious of a bike shop where the employees weren't screwing around. Also, are we talking about the little filipino Eric? He's got his apt. in BK set up super sweet, laboratory like to build anything you want. LuggedwithLove also works there and provides super fast, courteous customer service when she's not fooling around in the back. Shout out to my peeps.

hal is awesome, eric is new but not to the bike industry. he had a shop upstate for 8 years (which is closing) and is now working with us.

Get Eric and Hal to do an "in window" build off. That way we can see where the new guy stands. Set a time and date, I’ll show with the drinks and the bags.
When I was living in Brooklyn I tried to get a job there. Hal and Erin Nicole were the only nice people I talked to. Everyone else was no good.
