I might have an opportunity to purchase a 2003 Bianchi Axis for about $750, or a 2005 Axis for about $975. There are definitely a few changes and improvements (though this 2003 has a triple ring), but what would be some reasons to spend the extra dough? Any thoughts?

2005 also has a triple, though how the Sugino crankset performs is questionable. I'm also deciding b/w the Axis and a Bianchi roadie. I think the Axis' Ultralite frame should be pretty durable, especially w/ matte finish. $975 is a good price, given quality of frame, wheels, and component set. I'd say at least give it a ride. I liked it.

My girl friend has a 2003 Axis and we wound up upgrading a lot of components on the bike.
First of all it came with bars/stem that were too small (and kinda crappy).
Then we swapped out the cranks/BB, front derailleur, seat/seatpost.
Hers came as a double and she wanted a triple so that was part of the reason for the changes.
Supposedly the ones built after hers are spec'd a little better. The cranks I've heard are still mediocre.
It's rare to see an Axis at any of the cross races that hasn't had some sort of upgrade.
The bike rides/handles great though.
