The black knob on the quick release of my front tire come off and reveled a small spring. I have tried putting it back together in various combinations but invariable, the brakes rub the tires before I even put back the quick release of the brakes of my Trek 1000, how is this spring supposed to go in?

Help, Please!

Put the small end toward the hub. When the wheel is centered between the drop outs, the tires will stop rubbing the brakes.

The widest part of the spring goes to the outside, (knob side).
Check the cable release on the brakes, it might be caught and not all the way seated.

The wide part of the spring goes in the knob.

There should be two sprngs, one on either side. So this one goes where the knob came loose at.

They come in pairs, and if you only see one then you have lost the other one

I found it. I'm going to try and put it together again!

Then you'll have to make do. It will be OK to just tighten it down and ride home. Those springs are just there for the skewer to open up when it is unlocked. It has no effect on the wheel or the brakes or anything else. I've seen many bikes in my day with only one spring. They cost about .25 at the LBS. When you get some time, pick one up.

I found the second one, it is a bit bent (on the hallway floor), it looks definitly useable, I'll get a pair for LBS.

Again, thanks everybody for the great help!!!!!!! :D :D
