Need Help with Choosing a Cyclocross

I currently have a Trek mtb and live in NYC. Am planning to quit the train (most of the time) for the summer and bike in out and of the city. I am looking to get a cyclocross bike that can deal with NYC roads. Was wondering if anyone can recommend a cyclo that is under $800. Preferably around $500-600. Also would drop bars seem better than mtb bars for city riding. My commute is going to be about 80-100 miles a week. Thanks in advance.

Look into ebay, sometime you can get quite the deal. Found my Trek XO1 for $500, great condition & very well equipped. Good luck & have fun!

So you could look at it too, although I wouldn't really call it a cross bike. If you want it for commuting and not for cross racing you could look at steel road-bikes. Many of them would take up to a 28 tire which should be okay. Since its NY I'm guessing you don't want an expensive bike, so could you check with Goodwill? Lots of nice perfectly ridable older roadbikes can be found there for <$100. You might not even feel too bad if your bike were stolen.

I have a Cannondale T700 that I'm told would make a killer, light and tight cyclocross.

I bought is new in '99 and went on one tour out west, then we had kids... need I say more?

So, the bike is mint, and I tore it down yesterday to prep it for straight bars, v-brakes and shifters. I decided that I'm not going to do that, I want a mountain bike instead.

I have all the original stuff (turn down bars, bar end shifters, cant brakes, and WHEELSET).

So, that's what I have, this is what I want.
I'm looking to ether sell the frame and all components for about $300.
Or trade for a mountian bike frame and/or components -or- a mountain bike.
