Has anybody read this book? What are you opinions?

I've got it on my shelf, but I'm not inclined to read it since the movie was so tedious. Yeah, I know, now's about the time someone chimes in with how much better the book was, but I've got plenty of other things to read that I'm actually interested in.

You don't have to read every word... ever try skimming?

Aren't there any reputable history books on the subject?
That was rhetorical.

I liked it.
It was the Odyssey set in a different period.
I haven't seen the movie. I'm not sure I'd want it for a history text.

I liked the book, probably in part because some of it took place in my old stomping grounds and I was familiar with a lot of the areas he traveled through to get home. Didn't see the movie. The book does start kinda slow, can't say it's a page turner in any case.
The value of the book as history is that it will give you a feel for what life was like for people in that area. Most of the people in the mtns. of NC couldn't afford slaves, and didn't give a r/a one way or the other about the civil war... it was hard enough just getting by.
