Ok what i wanna do is upgrade my bike( trek 4300 '04)....I am doing it all myself ...I cant afford to pay someone to do it for me ...so i do it myself....maybe i learn something.

since i am Not loaded with cash i will do it in serveral steps. Drivetrain components First

ok my bike is an 8 speed....with all budget parts.....i would like to upgrade to a complete set of Shimano deore ...can i just pop in new deore cranks and cassette?? do i need the front derailer and back derailer??.....i relize i would need 9 speed shifters also.

BB confusion.....i have looked at my trek manual...and cant find any info on what size of BB it has :(

am i missing anything here?? will 9 speed cassete fit on ?

and i got myself a good book Ziin and the art of MBT repairs

Hope someone can help

Thanks

Madwack

Oya PS. the Old parts will be added to a bike I can trash around ....like off the side of a cliff..and it wont make me cry :)

ahhh FD ...I get it now :))

from looks of it the current BB is a73x121? with a chain line of 50mm

I gonna guess here and say that the 121 is the length of the spindels??

that almost makes sence..i think

that almost makes sence..i thinkYou match the spindle length, and interfaace type to the crank you are buying not the length that is in there now. Altho you do need the 73 shell width. The 510 takes a 110/113 spindle, either square taper or octalink depending on the specific model.

Looks pretty good. Only reservation is the BB spindle length as I'm on 113 for the Deore crankset on my 4300. No idea about the Nashbar cassette but that's about the price of a Shimano HG-50 Deore?

Maybe it's just me, but I would stay with the 8-speed driveline. I like the "robustness" of it. I think when stuff starts wearing out on my Trek 4500, I will simply upgrade components within the 8-speed parameters.

ok ...since i am buyn all from nashbar i dont see a Shimano HG-50 Deore

SH-BBUN53 73X110 Reg $21.95 now $19.95

so that sucker should work??

well about the 8 sp 9 sp stuff....i would prefer to stick with one set of components Deore ( its in my price range) :) but is there really a diff between 8 and 9 spd..pros or cons??

i use my bike mostly for the paths in Fishcreek Park, it is mostly those red gravel paths with some offroad..specially SW Fishcreek...im 40 years old and really not into wanting to kill myself..i just want some good components that will last a good time

the old components will be added to a bike I can trash and have fun with...dont wanna trash the Trek :)

and if i still dont got the right BB can someone take a BOO and pick one out fer me....link below to nashbar BB section

keep cost in mind :)

so that sucker should work??It works if the crank is a square taper. Your seat tube being fat aluminum might suggest a 113 spindle as a better choice.

For my riding style, an 8 speed does what I need it to do. The cost to upgrade to 9 speed components is not worth the exponential cost increase relative to the (arguable) performance gain. I can upgrade or replace broken 8 speed stuff 3 times for the same amount of money to upgrade to 9 speed once. (IMHO of course.) :)

You're obviously upgrading the entire drivetrain and Deore is a good choice for the 4300 so don't worry, 9 speed works just fine.

Definitely 73x113 bb for 22/32/44 crankset, either taper or Octalink; 110 would not work as the FD cage would hit the frame before shifting onto the lowest (little) ring.
