Bicycle Mechanics - Did Shimano 105 STI levers ever come in 8 speed?

I have a bit of a frankenstein road bike that was put together by a bike shop and which I use as a commuter. I currently have the Shimano 105 brake lever/shifter combo (is that STI?), with an 8 speed cassette and a worn out crappy Shimano rear derailleur. I will be swapping this stuff onto a frame that fits me better but I was wondering if I have been shortchanged by 1 gear in the cassette this whole time. If so, when I swap stuff over, I will just spring for a new 9 speed cassette. If the 105 shifters did come in 8 speed then I will stay with the same cassette.

From the research I did on the Shimano sight, it only lists the 105 as 9 speed, and the 8 speed stuff was Sora.

Also, it looks like a 9 speed 105 derailleur will work on an 8 speed cassette. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Please respond here since my yahoo email is on the fritz.105 stishifters were also 8 speed. They have a 5mm hex bolt fight in the center of the shifter face. 9 speed wouldn't shift a 8 speed cassette anyway as the cog spacing is considerably different.

OK then I definitely have the 8 speed shifter, as confirmed by the hex bolt in the middle of the shifter head. Thanks!

A new 105 9 speed rear derailleur will still work with the 8 speed cassette, correct?
