Ever get annoyed that members keep telling other people what to do, even when they have absolutely zero power to do so? Why even have moderators if their functions are performed by non-moderators? Apart from editing actual posts, their duties are occasionally filled by regular members; members who have not been appointed to do any such task but feel the need to fill some type of void in their lives by acting like one. My request is simple: Leave moderating duties to moderators.
Thank you for your time.
P.S. If you need justification purposes for this, consider the fact that instead of just one official moderator cautioning a member that they have broken the rules, that 5 or 6 "non-official moderators" warn them in an overly hostile tone that they have 'crapped' on the rules. This creates a negative environment for the poster and is referred to as a "poisoned environment" and will grossly affect any future interaction between said rule breaking member and the forum as a whole. If we're trying to scare off members then by all means continue letting members over step their boundaries. But if we're not, disallow such a thing.

So if you see someone breaking the law, say they're attacking an old lady, do you do nothing, because you're not a police officer, and therefore it's not your job?
I agree that people shouldn't jump all over other forum members who make newbie mistakes. There's a proper way to refer them to the best way to behave. If only the moderators do this policing, they will have no time to do anything else here.
Keep in mind, if you see a member behaving inappropriately, whether they're breaking forum rules, or being rude to someone who broke the rules, you could step up and set them straight.

Swiff, while I partially agree, forums have to self moderate themselves a bit too. Moderators aren't always on. Sometimes members take it to far to enforce the rules and they have been put in their place, but why as a community should there be only te moderators helping to keep the place 'nice'...
I think a 'poisoned' community is one that leaves all the work to certain people and ignores the problem until such a point as the enforcer arrives, while monogodo's example of the cop is an extreme example, it is correct. When I was a member I made sure to keep my eyes and ears out and reported a lot of posts. I also tended to be a bit of a loud mouth and butt in to. That was my job as a community member. Its a community, not a police state.

True, Mael, but at the same time, if you feel like you're being overly attacked by a member who seems a bit "sensitive" towards everything you may say, please do hit that report button [SPAM!] and let the moderators know what's up. We can calm people down as needed.

Sorry I didn't mean my statement to be exclusive and remove the moderator. We should still receive a report, I just don't believe that members should just stand by and wait. Being pro-active doesn't kill everyone :)

Take a deep breath, swiff, and don't take things so seriously. WD40 is one of those things that's like a red rag to a bull for some people. Personally... well, I'd better not go there.
If you've been called a troll only once since joining, and you have been the subject of some harrassing or bad language, YOU AREN'T TRYING HARD ENOUGH. Take it from one who trolls and treads the thin line all the time. :D
By the way, look at how long the people (or at least one) who initiated your angst have been members of the forums. Then look at how long you have been a member. Seniority sometimes counts when it comes to that patrolling issue you mention. I've indulged in it a couple of times, too with fools, mainly. At least Raiyn paid you the compliment of intelligence before "insulting" you.

I agree, forums need to 'self moderate;, but theres a limit to how far this should go. Of course I sometimes just get annoyed at people who go around almost acting like its 'there' forums. Could name a few but wont. Although thats nothing to get worried over, just that some people will try and take control more then otheres, just gotta live with it, I have.

Aha, forgot about this thread. Let us use this police metaphor and apply it to a lesser degree. Using an old lady creates a substantial bias. Let us pretend that we are going grocery shopping. Let us than pretend we take 11 items to the "express 10 items and under" checkout aisle. We proceed to get in line and wait. After 4 people have passed through, it is our turn. We check all our items out and realize "Oh me oh my, we appear to have purchased 1 item over said check out limit." We scoff at our moment of brief, very minor rule breaking and remind ourselves that next time we should count more carefully. Suddenly, someone behind us pipes up, "HEY! That guy has 11 items! Get out of line stupid, this is the 10 item line!" Another behind you adds in his unwanted 2 cents, and another, and another, and the cashier and a stock boy push their 2 pennies in too. You are required to get out of line and go to the other check out aisle. This takes an additional 10 minutes of unwanted embarassment as many a person in the super market are craning their necks to see "THE RULE BREAKER."
I'm not sure if AOL'ESE or foolish questions can be equated with attacking old ladies, but I sure as hell think they coincide with having too many items in an express check out lane. Does AOL'ESE or "newbie" questioning warrant such a barrage of hostile posts? Just as you would not want to be scolded for having too many items in your basket, should we not apply the same thinking to the breaking of minor forum rules?
If you think AOL'ESE and attacking old ladies are on the same page then by all means let us have our self-appointed police squad. If not, then maybe, just maybe, I'm right for once.

Well darn it... it all starts small and escalates from there, old chap. You get away with one item over the 10 limit the first time, and you think you can get away with two, and then eventually three, and voila! You have a whole grocery cart there! And you expect rule-abiding people to mind their business?
It's like, let's see, something we can all identify with... riding through a red light. You do it the first time, even though you know you are breaking the rules/laws. But you get away with it, then you do it again and again. I have not qualms in getting stuck into some idiot cyclist whom I see do that. It's self policing, and it may just save the jerk.
But then there are some jerks who resist advice, not matter how well founded it might be.

Oh please. Nobody crossed the line. I was referring to someone using AOL'ESE and then 5 or 6 people jump on him for using it as opposed to 1 friendly moderator note. How about this then...If one person tells the 'offender' that they have broken the rules in a kindly gentile manner, hows about noone else can repeat said advice?
And Rowan, again, the red light issue creates a huge bias as we all know running a red light causes potential safety issues and is an actual law but I agree, some noobs have 20 items in the 10 item lane, but they usually learn. Usually.
And operator, I've been a member for 3 months less then you so...Thanks

Sounds reasonable. But don't get too upset about it. Chill out.
Inevitably, you will find the same ones will jump on the issue. It becomes a bit of fun after a while either watching... or igniting it... hehehehehe. Not that I've ever ignited it, of course!!!

I'm not upset but when I'm trying to be serious I post in an overly formal tone.
Its nearing Winter, and the snow is a coming so i've been visiting some Ski forums every now and then, and I can tell you this! I've never, ever been on a worldwide forum that works so well as this one. I've been around on other forums in the past, and people just dont know each other, Mods dont do there job and are too up themselves for being mods in the first place, people dont give advice and they dont have a strong 'community' bond like this one. So I can guarentee you that your lucky to have a forum that works so well! Lots of work has obiously been put into it, and it is kept matined brilliantly. Mods mod there own section, and do a great job. If thats not enough, the general public take it into there own hands to help these forums run the way they should! And I wonder to myself why, how do these forums work so well? Well thats your answer, self moderation. Members actually give a s**t about this place, and do what they can to help keep in like this. This shows that people actually 'care' for the forums, which is a good thing...not a bad thing.
Just thought I would point that out.

There's nothing wrong with forum users criticizing the way we post. It's part of the give and take that helps set the informal rules that make this forum work. Thanks to the self-policing, the mods only rarely get involved.
I also think that some people are too thin-skinned. There's a difference between criticism and censorship. If you think a critique of you is unfair or too harsh, why should you care what some anonymous idiot on the internet thinks about you? Defend yourself if you want, but don't take it personally.
