I am looking for suggestions on how to simulate hill climbing when you live in the flatland of Florida. Later this year I am going out West on vacation and want to do some road cycling in the rockies. I understand that going from sea level to 5000 feet will require acclimation. My concern is getting my legs in shape for some of the climbs I've been reading about. So far I've been using local bridges that have around a 10% grade but they aren't that long. One idea I had is to do interval training pushing an ultra high gear for some distance, say 2 miles. Thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, you could do low cadence, high resistance intervals, or ride into a headwind. The only way to actually simulate the climbing position, which takes getting used to, is to put your front wheel up on a trainer.
I asked this same question because I am moving to Holland soon. Someone suggested finding multilevel parking garages and training on the ramps. Maybe this will work for both of us.
