Should I grease the splines on my Shimano Octalink Splined Cranks?

1) Zinn says it makes no difference.
2) ParkTools website says to grease.
3) Bikeforums search results seems evenly divided.

I'm leaning towards greasing, anybody know the pros and cons?

Thanks!

2004 Santana Noventa Stowaway Shimano instructions say grease the spindle. You can't go wrong with grease on them, so what's the issue? If they have self extractors, remove them and the bolts so the splines can be lined up before torquing them.

You can grease Shimano Octalink and ISIS splined BB splindles, but NEVER grease any square taper BB spindles. Greasing those can lead to over tourquing.

Funny that shimano ships current square taper BB with the spindle pre greased. Must be a conspiracy to sell more cranks dut to overtorquing.... ;) :p

I was acutally going to say the same thing as I had a similar discussion in the FG/SS forum.

edit: About the pregreased spindle not the conspiracy(but I wouldn't put it past Shimano)

. Greasing those can lead to over tourquing.
