Bicycle Mechanics - Do unused tire age well?

A friend of mine crashed three times.....Wife made him sell off his bike stuff... Hurt pretty badly...Rode before he should have...
So he has sets of tires he is just gonna give away to his old bike buddies...So, they are Armadillos..Offered them to me...They have been sitting on a hook in the garage for over a year or two...Someone said something about ozone..Tires deteroriate...Look like new to me...
So do tires that sit around and do nothing become unuseable?

I dont think 1 or 2 years will harm them.

They're Armadillos. It's not like age can make them ride any worse than a new pair.

If the tires "look like new", they probably have not been harmed! (Ozone problems would occur if the car was run in the garage frequently, or the tires were stored near an electric motor.)

In fact, is your friend's garage usually cool, dark, and shady? If so, the tires may not have "aged" all that much--with proper storage conditions (like those I mentioned), tires can be stored for years without damage.

Unfortunately, most of us cannot store our tires in "ideal" conditions--and the tires pay for it!!

bud...As a recall a washing machine/dryer..that uses electric. even if effected..guess, armadillos have such a thick thread..I will notice, should they age a little faster..

Use 'em. Ozone might affect the rubber but it won't impact the bead or caseing so you aren't going to get blowouts. Even if the tires wear out prematurely you'll still get more wear per dollar than anything that you can buy in a store 'cause they're free!

I'd try mounting them first off. I had a brand new Specialized Team Control (MTB, wire bead) tire that was in my Dad's barn for several years(I forgot about it). The tire was simply leaned against a wall. I offered it to my ride partner as he didn't care for his tires, but when we tried to mount it, it wouldn't even fit the rim--too big. 26" rim, 26" tire, but the tire is more like 28-29" now. Don't know how or why it stretched. The rubber relaxing over time, maybe? Some of the used tires I had in the same spot were a little loose on the rim, but the bead would actually lock, at least. Just the one that had never been used(still had the tag on it) was way out of spec.

Bike tires are like breasts, one is never enough and three is just too many, the older they get the more trouble they are likely to give you, and while big and puffy may make for a softer ride it just makes fitting things harder and will slow you down.
