- - I am on the Public Education committee of our local bicycle advocacy group. I am searching for images suitable for newspaper publication and school posters which illustrate the proper and legal maneuvers cyclists can take in traffic. The California State Driver handbook has a good example of what we're looking for but they have informed us that their images are protected by copyright. We want to avoid having to create new images if they are already available elsewhere.
Do you know of any bike advocacy group which has graphics or images similar to those in this DMV attachment?

How does a government agency get copywrite protection of a pubilc safty publication? I can understand protection aganist unauthorized use for profit, but not to promote safe driving/riding.

Maybe they were using copyrighted images from another source (i.e., they do not hold the copyright).

I's called "eminent domain." It's the same law that allows the government to force you to sell your house at current fair market value, regardless of how you feel about it, so they can run a freeway through your front yard. It may not make a lot of sense, but that's how things are in the land of the free and the home of the brave.
