Hello fellow MTB enthusiasts,

I'm relatively new to the sport and have run into a dilema building a new bike.

A little background without making this too long. I started out on a diamondback XC bike a few months ago and now I've gotten my mitts on an older rocky mtn rm6 frame that I'm trying to build on a budget. Hell, everything I do is on a budget, ha ha. Anyway I'm trying to use as many parts off the DBR as possible to save greenbacks.

The rm6 has a good isis BB in it, but I've got square cranks (firex) that seem nice and strong and are in good shape with rings that match the rest of my drivetrain. Do I get a square BB and use my cranks or do I look for isis cranks? I don't know which to do. It seems cheaper to get a BB, but I'm worried about future upgrade issues with the square one. I could be wrong in my assumption that the isis is more common these days.

Your thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Cheers

The better cranks made these days are ISIS splined.
It would be cheaper to get a Shimano square taper bb than to get a set of ISIS cranks even though it's my opinion that ISIS is better.
Here's what you do. get the square bb and upgrade the whole kit and kaboodle later as the Firex cranks aren't exactly something to write home about

Thank you.

In the meantime, I too have come to the same conclusion. i.e. cheaper soln. to get a sq. BB for now. It looks like they're cheap.

Cheers

Wow, those "sponsored links:" thread interruptions are annoying. :(

Got to pay the rent somehow. Not to many red stars around (including me)

What's a "red star"?

Somehow? OK. It's just that all the other forums I'm a member of, don't do that to registered members. It's fine for lookers, but I find it offensive.

This forums seems to be pretty active so I must be in the minority.

I just call 'em as I see 'em.

Cheers

Red stars denote "donating members". Joe has much costs associated with the site, additional servers are in the works. Those aren't cheap! Those "sponsored links" are some minor income to cover the costs.

If you like it here, it's nice to throw some Cha-Ching Joe's way. He'd appreciate it. He'd appreciate so much, you wouldn't have to see those pop-ups anymore!
