What is commuting? I am afraid to ask this cus it seems that I am the only one here being stupid.

What kind of terrain do you guys consider commuting? What kind of characteristics should a bike have to be suitable for commuting?

thanx:D

Umm... Riding to work? Any terrain you like, so long as you start at home and end up at work, or at the end of the (working) day start at work and end up at home.

That's what I understand as commuting, anyway. :)

that about sums it up, getting to work the lazy way, or the easy way.

One commuting website put it succinctly.
"To commute to work by bike you need 2 things: a job and a bike"

But why only commute to work? It may not fit the strictest definition, but all round errands, and other odds and ends qualify as commuting for me, if I'd normally see other people using their cars or other transportation to do them.

I'd say anything but competition, strictly fitness or recreational riding qualifies as a commute.

When I was "between contacts" I still used my bike to get around, but with no job to go to, I didnt have to do a regular daily journey on the same route. To me it didnt feel like I was commuting.

It feels quite different when you are riding the same route at the same time every day.

According to the Concise Oxford:

Commute: travel to and from one's daily work, usu. in a city, esp. by car or train.

Forget the car or train - give me a bike any day.
