Cough, cough, cough. I guess I'm suffering from asthmatic conditions thanks to that jerk***** who started the illegal campfire in Park County, Colorado. My commute all week is a struggle between breathing, coughing and spitting up this phlegm. I sure hope they find the person who started this inferno.

Sorry to hear about the trajedy and your personal struggle with it.
Since forest fire smoke contains a lot of suspended solids, maybe a simple nonwovens material face mask would help reduce your grief.

man i know exactly how you feel 2 years a go i was touring through Montana and Idaho i got hung up in the area of a hudge forest fire at one point i was surrounded and had to ride through an area that had fire on both sides of the road used a damp bandana and face msak to filter out some of the smoke but it was awfull riding, eyes burned, difficult to breathe, everything smelled like smoke some of the towns were evacuated many roads closed, thick smoke made it difficult to see during night, ash would fall on the tent and would have it covered in the morning, no open fires for cooking allowed, and looking at the damage was quite sad. The fire seaason is just starting again this colorado fire they say was strarted by a careless person rather then nature. winds and dry weather keep it fueled pray for rain and lots of it.

My fire department has an equal number of grass/wildland fires as it does house fires. We spend a lot of time training to use breathing apparatus during house fires because of the toxicity of construction materials.
Conventional wisdom of firefighting has been that grass/wildland fires are natural materials and there is not the same toxicity of materials being burned, so use of breathing appartus is not condoned.
Now, we have just purchased filters for our airpack masks, so they may be used in wildland settings. I think it is a neccesary change in the conventional wisdom.

There are a lot of people up here as far north as Fort Collins who are affected by the smoke. A lot of people I know who don't have allergies (including myself) have had problems with allergy-like symptoms. Mine haven't been as bad this past week, maybe I'm getting used to it. This is nothing compared with the damages elsewhere in the state.
In other news, Cannondale, if you're interested in a good ol' fashioned lynchin' let me know and we can chase down that forest service lady who started the fire.

Well she may not be coming home for some time. Does she realize what she's done!
