My XT shifter wasn't letting cable out. So I opened it up and flooded the entire inner unit with white lightening. It worked well that day, but on the ride today (4 days later), it was hesitating to let cable out. So I figured the white ligghtening had worn off. What sort of grease should I put in the shifters?? Or should I just warranty the unit??

Well if warranty is an option, I guess I might consider it. I would WD-40 them to clean 'em out let them dry and then put some silicone based lube in there.

What is an example of a silicone based lube?? What about the green grease that comes in housings, and used in many parts???

I mean something like tri-flow. I wouldn't stick grease in there. I just don't think it would help. Grease is more for threads and bearings.

I shot some Superlube in two of my shifters: Ultegra and LX rapid fire, it worked fine and still shifting without a glitch. Superlube has teflon in it.

I have some 7spd STX rapidfire units that are phww..'97, so they're 8 yrs old. I used lithium based grease once a year on them - shift as good as new. The stuff was Weldite(in uk), says 'long life anti-seize properties'

Blast them out with white lighting, then maybe some triflow.
