Foo - Kazza, limewire...are any of these programs truly spyware free.

ok well i really want to get a file sharing program but i have had some really bad experiences with kazaa and spyware..are there any programs that can be trusted to not infect your computer.

Have you tried kazaalite?
I haven't tried any of the torrets but people say they're pretty good.

ARES is also good. Its just like the Kazaa/Napster types, with no ads...

I really like Lime Wire, great searchability. No pop-ups yet.

Kazaa dl'ed the GAIN software (free version) that pops up every 2 minutes.

Torrents are great if you are looking for something extremely popular, like last night's TV shows, but they are not so great if you have something obscure in mind.

bitcomet is a good torrent interface, much better than the original one that pops-up the nagging webpage with Bram, the author's picture, on it.

Kazaa lite was suposed to have down a while ago. BUt its still available on the net, zero popups with it.

Don't even bother with all of that get Ares. Its so much better and absolutely No spyware. If you want it www.aresgalaxy.org .

Ares doesn't have enough people sharing anything. You have to deal with fakes with kazaa (lite or not). Torrents are slow, especially for bigger files where most people are just leeching, irc is only good for new stuff. The odds are stacked against you.

Ares is a pretty good interface, but legal stuff is hard to find. I used to use WinMX, and there was a ton of stuff on it. I stopped being able to find anything on it after a while, but I think that's because my school capped traffic on the ports it used, so a lot of my searches were timing out. I just installed Bit Torrent and have used it once so far. It worked fine, but the way you use it is totally different. It's a little short on configuration options. I don't know if eDonkey or eMule or whatever it's called is still around, but speeds were supposed to be pretty good on it.

It won't do you any good thoughl unless you're into jam bands, want to download whole concerts, and have-most likely- high speed connection because they can take a while. A 2-3 hour concert can take many hours/days to download. I love it, but you have to be into that kind of music (Phish, the Dead, Widespread, SCI, and the like) and have patience.

Everything on it is legal as all the bands on there allow there concerts to be taped and shared. Some bands, like Phish, began to sell some of their concerts on CD and the moderator-types of the network are vigilant to keep those shows off, as they are illegal to trade. It's all legit and a lot of fun; I have some great shows with some great tunes that I love to listen to.

If you're torrenting, look into the alternative clients (i.e not the official one). Bittornado is quite (very) configurable.

Well programmed, no ads, tells you everything (like if the file is corrupted), made for dsl: LimeWire.

I use giFT (http://gift.sourceforge.net/about.mhtml) which is a suite of peer-to-peers tools. giFT includes three levels of components. The core components include an API library and the giftd daemon/agent/service which is used to control communications via the network components that are designed as plugins to the core. These network plugins are designed to work with specific peer-to-peer networks such as Gnutella, OpenFT, FastTrack (KaZaA), Ares, OpenNap (Napster), etc... You can download and enable as many of the available plugins as you want and all will be used concurrently. The last component level is the UI. There is no one UI and actually you can connect multiple UIs to the running giftd. Several different UIs ranging from graphical ones with skinning capability to simple curses (ascii text) have been written.

What I like about giFT is that it will work on multiple networks simultaneously and concurrently. You don't need to care about which network you're using. It's all handled for you. Additionally, it is cross-platform, portable and works out of the box on:


Microsoft Windows-based operating systems
Mac OS X
GNU/Linux
BSD-based platforms
AmigaOS


In addition to the above, I have ported it to Solaris.

I don't know if anyone mentioned it but shareaza is the BEST(IMHO) fileshareing program for windows.
if you hit F9 you query which servers you get hosts from. It connects on several host types: G1(kazaa,limewire,bearshare,etc) and G2(shareaza) and edonky (torrents).
I don't run the torrent part, but its great to connect to every fileshareing client/service.

I like winmx. There was a way to neuter some older versions of one of the programs by replacing a rogue dll. Not sure if it's out there anymore. WinMX works great so I've heard :D

Limewire seems to be very good. I use to use Kazaa Lite, but then it went weird, so i then went with WinMX, but that gave me some bad virus, then Limewire came and i haven't had a single virus or bug yet.

Do not confuse style with immunity. Choice of operating system or application does not technically make you impervious or immune to a bug or virus. Security by obscurity only gets you so far and it's usually a pretty shallow detour off the beaten path. The most secure computer system in the world is sitting in a corner unplugged and unused... and even then, a thief can come and just physically steal it. There are no silver bullets.

Have been using WinMX for three or four years. It is possible to pick up an infected file. My Avast! virus program will kick in instantly when the virus code comes across. Has been happening more recently.... I use torrents mostly now.
