When I've changed flats recently (we have thorns everywhere here) I notice little half moons of metal in the tire (loose). They look like the rings of metal around the rim eyelets but none of them appear to be broken and the rim tape is intact. Does anybody have any ideas? The rim is a ceramic Bontrager Mustang. Thanks. After the Spinergy failure talk I am having faceplant nightmares. :(
Are you referring to ferrules? Are they breaking off from around your spoke nipples? If so, the rim is probably toast.
Without seeing it, we could try and guess what it is - but your best bet is to take the wheels to a high quality bike shop and have them take a look. Regarding Spinergy, as I remember it, only the older carbon 4-bladed spoked wheels were the ones that shattered. DAlex - is this correct?

That sounds bad. I'm curious why i can't see evidence of these breaking on the rim. Would a possible cause be over tightening the spokes?
